Default USB problems. ???

One of my USB ports dose not function !!!

I have a MSI MB Intel P III 450, Windows Me Installed..

I went to My Computer Prop Device Manager UNiversal Serial Bus
Controller

I fouend both
1- Intel 8280 USB Universal Host Controller
2- USB Root Hub

I tried to test both USB Ports on the MB.. Just one (same port phisically)
that functions..

I can not figure if its a Hardware or a Soft Ware problem?

If your USB interface is integral with the motherboard (i.e. not a USB - PCI
card) it *may* be caused by a loose or misplaced header connector on the
motherboard. Visual inspection of the connector to confirm that it is
properly seated may be all that is required. If your USB device is
recognised and works OK on one port but not on the other, then this
certainly sounds symptomatic.

However, it is also quite possible to damage (beyond repair) a USB port -
which could equally explain the problems you are having and can be caused by
simply mis-placing the USB plug (e.g. upside-down) in the USB port - and,
although that can require some force to implement, it is certainly
possible - believe me!! - Some 'cheaper' brands of plugs (and sockets)
sadly, are not exactly foolproof.

If the port is damaged beyond repair, one option would be to connect a
multi-port hub to the good port or even to fit a USB - PCI card (preferably
USB2.0 - the increase in speed is vastly worthwhile)

This little MS tool might not help in your particular case, but none the
less is a very useful tool worth checking-out. If you have a copy of the
Win98 CD, then see the following URL and try the usbview.exe on the CD. (NB
It's not on the WinME CD - but see below)
"How to Use the Windows 98 USB Device Viewer Utility"
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;272584

You can download usbview.exe from:
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/tec...SE/USBVIEW.EXE

HTH and good luck
