New version of CWShredder version 2.0 (by Intermute)
A general heads-up.
New version of CWShredder is available by Intermute, the makers of SpySubtract. http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract..._download.html As a FYI, it states version 2.0, and the actual CWShredder.exe program is version 2.0 . The exe.Installer for the program is version 1.61, as those of you who will scrutinize before installing will doubtless discover. Quite similar (yet not identical) in layout to the old venerable "Wonder program" by Merijn. Comes with some unnecessary baggage (IMHO), but I guess they want to try and finance the project somehow. You be the judge. One other thing, considering the extra "baggage", one would like the possibility of a "custom install" to the directory of choice. Such is not the case, and it will default install to C:\Intermute\SpySubtract -- LuckyStrike The best Tweak and your ally for IE = **Disable Active Scripting** http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/surf-safe.html How to make a good newsgroup post: http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm ------------------------------------------------------------ |

Thanks for the heads up. Been waiting for the update for some time.
Smooth, quick download with no problems. However, no uninstaller, and as you said, a bit of excess baggage. Also, doesn't load over the top of V1.59 so it has to be manually removed, but no big deal. Forgot to add that the original CWShredder doesn't need an un-installer
(never did, never has). It doesn't get "installed" but simply is extracted. I suspect this one is quite the same despite the few extra bits 'o baggage. Just delete the .exe's (or the folders and contents) and it's gone. -- LuckyStrike ------------------------------------------------------------ "bobster" wrote in message ... Thanks for the heads up. I guess you needed to run CWShredder 2.0 to break the "record 8 years". :-\\ Meanwhile, how many of those were **actually** "CoolWebSearch" items??? What's wrong with that picture? vbg Yeah, I'd be disgruntled too! Now CWShredder 2.0 didn't find diddly on my machine (but I don't use a Hosts file). I have noticed similar things with some programs (most often PestPatrol) which detect ActiveX compatibilities of SpywareBlasters protections and alert that such and such "spyware" was detected. I have since learned to do a thorough checking up - both internally and externally - on what is detected before having the program clean anything. With SpywareBlaster, one may just re-enable the protections and the registry domains/zones protections (or whatever) are once again restored. Question: If the items removed by CWShredder are dumped to the Recycle Bin, can one not just "restore" the items back to the location. Or does that not apply to Hosts file items or Registry items? The issue of CWShredder (earlier Merijn versions) cleaning outright, and not permitting a default of not cleaning was considered a *fault* with the program. I remember this fault being discussed in the NG here about a year ago, more or less.Later versions added that "Remove CWS detected items to the Recycle Bin, instead of deleting them" option. So then... I'd guess you don't approve of it. VBG -- LuckyS ---------------------- |

Why dintcha say something? hehe I got all kind of personally worried that this item (which *I* alerted the NG about) was responsible for you having those headaches.
