Default why is multimedia file not opening and what version direct x on 98se

Still cant get my multimedia components to open from the
control panel.

tried add/remove programs windows setup, didn't work

I came accross the following (see below) in ms helpsite
which indicates that there is too much info in the
multimedia tool file. Has anyone got any suggestions how
to get it out if I cant open the multimedia file.
Incidentally I was loading directx 9.b before all this
happened and I dont jnow if its to do with it.

I would also like to know how one can find out which
directx version is loaded on my computer if its windows 98
as according to ms diagdx only works to find out the
version on ms 2k and xp.

Thanks

Here is the stuff off ms helpsite:

SYMPTOMS
Under certain circumstances, all objects in the Multimedia
tool in Control Panel may not be displayed. This may cause
problems if you need to configure an object using the
Multimedia tool.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the size of the following
registry key becomes larger than 512 bytes:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

The Multimedia tool reads this key to obtain a display of
objects. If the size of this key is larger than 512 bytes,
the Multimedia tool cannot read the entire list of values
(512 bytes are approximately 50 objects).
RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may
cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall
your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you
can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor
incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this problem, use one of the following
methods:
Remove any unused audio or video codecs, sound card
drivers, or video capture devices from the Multimedia
tool. After the size of the registry key is less than 512
bytes, objects are properly displayed in the Multimedia
tool."

My 9.0b appears to be v.4.09.00.0901 there. But why not close all open
Windows, & "START, Run, DxDiag", and read it off the screen:
"DirectX9.0b (4.09.00.0902)?

Odd, those numbers are different.

It's "START button, Run, DxDiag". You should close all open apps first.
