Default New Macromedia Flash Player

Hey gang,
A number of sites have prompted me to install the new Macromedia Flash
Player to accommodate their site. My version is quite old. Have done some
looking into this and am in doubt about whether to install it. Is anyone
aware of any problems, i.e. adware, spyware, conflicts, etc., with the new
version?? I know, I running XP Home SP2, but, I trust this forum more than
any of the others~!
Many thanks and "howdy to
all"........
Heirloom, old and laid up for a while

P.S. for Joanie,
You aren't the only one that has foot surgery, :-) !

H,

I'm unaware of problems with Flash 9 however there are security problems
with Flash 8. See Microsoft Security Advisory (925143) - "Adobe Security
Bulletin: APSB06-11 Flash Player Update to Address Security
Vulnerabilities"
(http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec...ry/925143.mspx) and Adobe
Security Bulletin APSB06-11 - "Multiple Vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash
Player 8.0.24.0 and Earlier Versions"

Note that, as with Sun's Java, installing the upgraded Flash 9 does not
remove the files associated with Flash 8 such as flash8.ocx although AFAIK
it will no longer function.

Thanks Mike. I could not remove Flash 7 or 8 from Add/Remove and I just
ran a check on what was on here and it is Adobe Flash 8.0.24.0. I will
download the latest one and then see if I can remove the earlier ones in
Add/Remove.

You can create a simple Batch file to remove Flash 8 after installing .

@Echo off
regsvr32 /u /s %windir%\system32\macromed\flash\flash8.ocx
del %windir%\system32\macromed\flash\flash8.ocx

Thre is also a way to do it with MSIExec.exe such as...

start -- run
MsiExec.exe /X{CSLID #}

I just don't have the "CSLID #" handy :-(

BTW: I am in the process of mitigating vulnerabilities on my LAN thanx to reports from
Harris Stat.

Adobe Reader and Acrobat, Flash, Symantec, QuickTime are the vast majority.

I have been simplifying the process using KiXtart scripts.

David,
I used the uninstall program offered by Adobe for removing Flash 8
and earlier versions. It did, in fact, remove the flash8.ocx file. I
checked, as thoroughly as I am able, and found nothing remaining after using
their uninstall. One word of caution to anyone installing the Flash 9,
unless you want the Yahoo! Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it as part of the
install!
It is installed by default, unless you refuse it.
Don't really know why I wanted the Flash 9, except that there have
been a number of sites I have wanted to look at recently that tell me I need
it to view the site.
Heirloom, old and got it anyway

Thanx. Do you have a URL for this uninstaller ?

As for the Yahoo! toolbar. It and the Google Toolbar are barred on my LAN. In my Domain
Login Script if they are found on the PC, they are summarily removed. The same routine in
the Login Script is in the Qucktime and Flasg "fix" script just in case the technician
failed to uncheck the Yahoo checkbox.

Hey Loon......where did you get that uninstall program?? I could look
for it on Adobe, I guess (reading your mind, lol).

I checked via Search in Windows Explorer and saw no evidence of
Macromedia or Adobe Flash and believe I removed all of them from there.
But sure have a ton (24) of entries for my Adobe camera program and
Adobe Reader.

Anyone use the Shockwave program?? The odd site asks for it and I used
to have it on WinME. I need it in order to do jigsaws from the Houston
Chronicle, would you believe, Mr. Texas Tinhorn??
