Default Problems starting up

Help...

I know this might be hardware, rather than software, but I don't know who to
turn to.

Since yesterday the computer has problems starting up and when I manage to
do it it goes into the BIOS setup and displays the following:

During the last boot-up your system hung for an improper CPU speed setting.
Your system is now working in safe mode. To optimize the system performance
and reliability make sure the CPU speed conforms to the specification of
your CPU.

---------

I have 98SE and as far as I know a 800 MHz CPU which is what the CPU speed
in the BIOS setup says. So, I don't understand what may be happening.

Any ideas or where I could turn to for help?

Thank you very much

It's very possible that the BIOS battery on the motherboard no longer holds
a charge. If so, when you start up the BIOS goes into default mode. The
battery is about the size of a nickle (5 cents) and easily replaceable.

Thanks

Is there a way of testing the battery, prior to getting a new one?

A voltmeter and a resister for a load. But it's not worth the trouble. It's
probably a CR-2032 which you can buy at your local drugstore or supermarket.

A weak battery will usually cause the date and time to be slow.

Did you check whether the CPU fan is working? Are there any
swollen/leaking capacitors near the CPU socket?

I installed the program of Asus that checks on fan speed and it is within
the limits and so are the temperatures of CPU and Motherboard.

I will change the battery and then see what happens.

Thank you very much for your help
