Default BAT Deltrees (Att. CPR)

OK, PCR! You asked for it! Rather long winded!

The batch File in question is named ‘Clean.bat’.

echo off
c:\windows\smartdrv.exe
deltree /y c:\recycled
deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1
deltree /y c:\windows\temp
deltree /y c:\windows\tmp
deltree /y c:\windows\ff*.tmp
deltree /y c:\windows\history
deltree /y c:\windows\cookies
deltree /y c:\windows\recent
deltree /y c:\windows\spool\printers
del c:\WIN386.SWP
del c:\windows\WMPLIB~1.db

Checking the Clean.bat lines:
Please, keep in mind that most of the above file was composed by “I forgot
‘who’ or ‘when’ back in time on NewsGroup for W95 or W98.
Some of the above lines are ‘greek’ to me, like:

1. c:\windows\smartdrv.exe
***
Not sure at all why this line is there.
***

2. deltree /y c:\recycled

PCR, your reply to my statement that the Recycle Bin does show to be
occupied, but does not display any, when opened, was this: ‘If you want the
Bin emptied, JUST R-Clk it, & "Empty Recycle Bin". If you want sometimes not
to put a deleted item into the Bin, hold SHIFT as you click to delete it.
That item goes to oblivion. If you never want a thing in it, R-Clk it,
Properties, bolt 'Use one setting...', & check 'Do not move files to the
Recycle Bin'. All items go to oblivion.’

To my statement:
‘If it is normal for the Bin to show that is occupied after executing the
Batch File in question, this might explain why at times I happen to notice
that the Bin is occupied, but
no Files are shown and the Restore Option is not available. However, the
option for emptying it is still available.’

You replied:
‘Yea, yea, that is normal, BUT wacky & incredible! I certainly wouldn't want
to keep doing it! Do one of the other options! What's so hard about holding
in the SHIFT key,
until the day you want to keep one? That's what I do!’

***
I understand and thank you for the tips, but do not feel comfortable
preventing deleted files from going to the Recycle Bin. There have been
several times when I had to restore some Files that had been deleted
unintentionally. However, the fact that Clean.bat leads to the hiding of them
without the option for restoring any of them , could pose a problem, if I
were to fail to check the listing of them before executing it.
***
3. deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1
(You recall that this Folder was Tempor~2)
***
I thought this was appropriate, since I could see that after an Internet
session, several files are generated and the Index.dat, in the Content.IE5
Folder, becomes larger. These
changes, from comments heard in the NewsGroup, would not cause any problems,
if removed. So I included the line in the batch file. For all I know, it
has worked OK and
without any apparent problem.
The only peculiar thing that I notice is that, following Clean.bat and
typing Exit to re-start Windows, 4 new sub-folders appear in the Content.IE5
sub-folder, along with
Index.dat and Desktop.ini Files. Each od the 4 sub-folders has only one
file... desktop.ini.
All the Desktop.ini (there are 5, now) show the file to have the same Date
and same size, at 1KB. Incidentaly, they have different names any time they
are re-created. I can easily
delete them, but new ones reappear , but with different name, following the
described activities. However, the Index.dat, from whatever size it may have,
it is deflated down to 48KB, whenever I execute Clean.
***
Your observation:
‘You may set Temporary Internet Files to delete automatically, at... Control
Panel, Internet Options, Advanced tab, Security section.’

***
I would not know what would be safe to do with the options available in the
Security Section and I rather leave it alone. Often, I open the IE and Delete
Cookies and Internet
Files, Clear History and, in the Content Menu, I go to Auto Complete and
Clear Forms and Passwords.
***

Your comment about my activity in the IE:
‘If you do this, you needen't do it in the .bat file. And you needn't do all
of this, if you put a check in "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when
browser is closed"-- where I said! (Of course, you won't be able to browse
offline, then.) ‘

***
I have no clue about Clear Forms and Passwords. Cookies, History and
Tempor~1 Folders are cleared of created files, except that Index.dat files,
in Cookies and Tempor~1, remain untouched, as they retain the same size.
After Clean.bat, from whatever size they had before, they are reduced to 16KB
and 48KB, respectively. I assume these sizes are the default minimum.
***

4. deltree /y c:\windows\temp
5. deltree /y c:\windows\tmp

Your observation:
| deltree /y c:\windows\temp
| deltree /y c:\windows\tmp

‘ ....that is needed to complete an install. ‘

***
Understood! I have no clue about either. No objection about taking the lines
out.
***

6. deltree /y c:\windows\ff*.tmp
***
No clue. However, I do see a minute number of files, if at all, when
searching or going to the Folders in line 4, 5 and 6.. MSExplorer does not
show much about these Folders(?).
As far as I am concerned, these entries can be deleted from Clean.bat.
I would prefer to enter a line to delete *.tmp Files. I search and delete
these Files periodically, but I would not know how to incorporate this line
in the Batch File.

Your Comments:
‘Would you still get ff*.tmp files without that line?
There is a more permanent fix..’.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=221438
Files with names that begins with "fff" appear in your Windows folder after
you install Office 2000
Read the article, as there is a bit more to do than just...

(1) START button, Find, F/F, fff*.*
(2) Browse "Look in" to "C:\Windows", & click "Find now".
(3) Ensure they all look about the same...

fff137e3_{3BC6A120-EFC3-11D2-96F7-D0634EC10000}.tmp
fff137e3_{3BC6A121-EFC3-11D2-96F7-D0634EC10000}.tmp

(4) Get them all highlighted, R-Clk the group, & select "Delete".

They should all end up in the Recycle Bin. Empty it some day soon.

***
PCR, I have searched for these files, as suggested, but find hardly anithing
resembling those listed in step (3).
***

7. deltree /y c:\windows\history
***
All gets cleared up upon execution of the Clean.bat file. I do not see much
reason to go back to those sites, if that may be a reason to keep them alive.
Most of the needed sites
are stored in my ISP’s Favorites File.
***

Your Comment:
‘You may also... Internet Options, General tab, set "Days to keep pages in
History" to zero. (But you won't be able to see where you've been easily,
after that.) ‘

8. deltree /y c:\windows\cookies
***
The files created in this Folder do not mean much to me. The Index.dat may
get inflated. The size gets down do 16KB, after Clean. Similar to the one in
Content.IE5, I have not
experienced any ill effects from the clean-up routine.
***

Your Comment:
‘And... Internet Options, Privacy tab, Advanced button, & block all Cookies.
(But some sites might actually refuse to work, then.) ‘

***
PCR, it does not sound too difficult to do. I would probably be annoyed by
pop ups dealing with Cookies while getting to various sites on the Web.
***

9. deltree /y c:\windows\recent
***
It gets cleared up, nicely.
***

Your suggestion:
‘RECENT can be turned permanently off with a Registry tweak...
"START button, Run, RegEdit", & navigate to...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer

That is,
(a) Click plus signs, beginning left of "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" & ending left of
"Policies".
(b) Click "Explorer" in the left pane, not it's plus sign (if any).
(c) Right-Clk in the right pane, & select "New, Binary Value".
A name for the value is requested by highlighting "New Value #1".
(d) Paste or type "NoRecentDocsHistory" over "New Value #1".
(e) Right-Clk "NoRecentDocsHistory", & select "Modify"
(f) Type... 01 00 00 00
(g) Exit, & it may be necessary to reboot.

***
I followed your instructions, PCR, and deleted entries accordingly. So far,
so good. Nothing has been shown on the ‘Recent Folder’ nor in Documents from
Start|Documents. Success, maybe?
***

10. deltree /y c:\windows\spool\printers
***
Same as in line 9. I see no special reason for this, since printing is not
an everyday need, for the usage of the Computer.
***

11. del c:\WIN386.SWP

Your observation:
‘This is the Swap File. It is unnecessary under normal circumstances to
delete it at boot. It is cleared anyway, automatically, & resized after about
5 minutes on it's own. Some will have it in C:\Windows, which is it's
original location until you go mess with VM settings. ‘

***
That is OK with me. I can take it out, with no after thoughts.
***

12. del c:\windows\WMPLIB~1.db
***
This File does get inflated. I do not know if there is a limit. Clean.bat
does its job.
***

********
So much for this!
I do not know if all has been covered in full. It’s is only the first stab
at it! I do want to emphasixe that, in my estimation, the Clean.bat, even if
it needs touch up, appears to be much easier and less troublesome than doing
other things that may or may not do as well or be sort of umpredicrable as to
the outcome.
Ccleaner that Gekko suggested is a lot easier to use, but I see that it is
not as thorough.
Again, these are my assumptions..

OK, PCR! You asked for it! Rather long winded!

The batch File in question is named ‘Clean.bat’.

.. . .
1. c:\windows\smartdrv.exe
Not sure at all why this line is there.

Anomaly: this is an MS DOS utility that
installed Win98 does not need (but may be
convenient during SETUP Win98.) We do
not to delete it from the hard drive every time.

2. deltree /y c:\recycled

(a) Useful only if we have reason to suppose
the Recycled folder is damaged. (Next Win98
boot creates a new empty one.)
(b) If we have any other hard drives (D: etc.)
the command must be reiterated
deltree /y D:\recycled
separately for each drive.

3. deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1

(a) See remarks above: DELTREE removes a folder
i.e. is needed only if we suppose the folder is
somehow either damaged or harmful. To delete
contents we simply
DEL c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*

(b) The command line may be harmful if a system
also needs a folder named c:\windows\tempor~1
This is not a system file (i.e. is not created by
Win98 on reboot) so if we really need it and have
DELTREEd it the batch file ought also to create
a new one by
MD c:\windows\tempor~1

(c) There is no compelling need for more than
one temporary folder: its function is merely to
hold files temporarily created during instal or
download activities, and that delete themselves
when the activity completes (if perfectly programmed
-- which is rare.)

4. deltree /y c:\windows\temp
5. deltree /y c:\windows\tmp

Same remarks apply

6. deltree /y c:\windows\ff*.tmp

This removes files created by MS Office Fast Find
(always a memory hog, useful when CPUs ran at
only 133 to 400 MHz, a waste of space on modern
PCs.) If we do not use this Office utility we do not
need to remove its data output.

7. deltree /y c:\windows\history

This DOS command removes a Win98 system
file -- bad idea:
a: Win98 components let us review or relocate
this system file and delete conntents If we need the space.
b: Removing the folder without recreating it will
cause major problems if we later run IEXPLORE.

8. deltree /y c:\windows\cookies

Same comments: this is a Win98 system file.
Win98 lets us empty it if we know we need to.
Deleting the folder without recreating it is
simply asking for trouble.

9. deltree /y c:\windows\recent

This is different. MS Office creates a folder
named \Recent
but within \Windows\Application Data
i.e. not at this address. So this command
does nothing -- unless we have for our own
purposes created c:\windows\recent -- so
have now deleted it i.e. frustrated our own
purposes.

10. deltree /y c:\windows\spool\printers

Another silly error . . .
a: Each completed spooling routine leaves behind
it a file of fewer than 200 bytes. Are we that desperate
for space?
b: Removing this system folder without recreating
it damages our system.

11. del c:\WIN386.SWP

OK: this swap file is Win98's own "Virtual Memory,"
created on reboot. Because a system file, Win98
would not let us DEL it. DOS is not thus inhibited.
But if we DEL the swap file and continue running
(without reboot to create a new swap file) we will
sooner or later crash the system and lose data.

Lots of what you say is good, Phillipson, BUT...

| 1. c:\windows\smartdrv.exe

|
| Anomaly: this is an MS DOS utility that
| installed Win98 does not need (but may be
| convenient during SETUP Win98.) We do
| not to delete it from the hard drive every time.

SmartDrv is no anomaly! It is a DOS disk-caching utility! Without it, you may wait 2 hours or more for TIFs to delete in DOS-- & come to think you must be deleting all of Windows! It is hugely quicker with SmartDrv, though may still seem slow if TIFs are incredibly huge. STILL, I'd delete TIFs in Windows not DOS, except in rare circumstances.

C:\Smartdrv /?
Installs and configures the SMARTDrive disk-caching utility.
SMARTDRV [/X] [[drive[+|-]]...] [/u] [/C | /R] [/F | /N] [/L] [/V | /Q | /S]
[InitCacheSize [WinCacheSize]] [/E:ElementSize] [/B:BufferSize]
....snip

| 3. deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1
|
| (a) See remarks above: DELTREE removes a folder
| i.e. is needed only if we suppose the folder is
| somehow either damaged or harmful. To delete
| contents we simply
| DEL c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*

DEL c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*

THAT will only get the FILES in ...Tempor~1. It will not get the weirdly named sub-folders nor the files within them.

Deltree C:\Windows\Tempor~1 /y

That gets it all, including ...Tempor~1, the folder.

Deltree C:\Windows\Tempor~1\ /y

By including the final backslash (\), the folder ...Tempor~1 is KEPT, but ALL inside of it is deleted.

REMEMBER to be careful with DELTREE. It will do it's deletes irretrievably in the absence of backups or 3rd party undelete programs!

Thanks or Good Luck,

Naturally, you will not sue,

I have "customized" it and removed some lines that only apply to me.
Other lines can easily be added. This is a separate bat file because
deletes should only be made after Windows has loaded. Otherwise
program installs that call for a re-start use temp files to complete
the install and without them will fail. Make a shortcut to the file
on the desktop and drag it into the Quick Launch Bar and run it
after Windows loads or put the shortcut in the StartUp folder,
there it executes after any installs are finished.

Using IF EXIST makes sure the intended delete goes to the right
place and not a parent folder if the intended folder is missing.
Using \*.* at the end of a line deletes the files in the folder, not
the folder.
Things like Smartdrv are usually put in the Autoexec.bat file and
loaded automatically at boot.

Using /Y Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to delete
the subdirectory.
Use DELTREE cautiously. Every file and subdirectory within the
specified directory will be deleted. It can erase an entire drive.

Thanks Don Phillipson, PCR and Bill Watt!
You fellows overwhelm me with info. I wish that I could be able to
understand all that you are discussing between yourselves and/or suggesting
that I deal with. Not that easy! Surely time is needed for me to absorb the
important items and edit Clean.bat to perform properly, without causing any
problem.
To reiterate, I usually use Clean.bat after a long online session and before
shutting the Computer off for the day. I click on
Start|Shut Down|Restart in MS-DOS Mode
Then, at the C:\Windows prompt I merely type, Clean. When done, I either
turn the power off or Type Exit to restart in normal Mode and check the
outcome/results of Clean.bat. All the Folders are there, but freed up of
created files or system files reduced to a smaller size.
I am certainly willing to edit the batch file to prevent possible problems.
Bill's Clear.bat looks very interesting and, presumably, very effective in
doing what it is supposed to do and not cause any problems.

Thank you all for your inputs!

Bap, your post has become very intense, never forget that
the computer is for fun and that it is at your command, not
the other way around.
Some of the things you are doing are really not necessary even
in 'good house-keeping', chill a little and get out to the beach.

not the other way around.)

Naturally, hold SHIFT as you click to delete ONLY when absolutely certain you don't want the file. Otherwise, have one of these very handy...

You need 3rd Party software for that. And the longer you use the computer, the less likely you will get a deleted file back. After Delete, the space occupied by the file can freely be used by the system. As soon as something overwrites it, the file is truly gone.

It's dangerous to have a Deltree in a .bat! Some day... a little tipsy... even JUST hyper on coffee... you may go in & alter it to ill effect-- very ill effect!

"Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete Files button, bolt Delete
all offline content, OK, OK", is the best way. That does a credible job, in IE6 anyway!

The size of TIFs is controllable by the slider & input box at "Control Panel, Internet Options, Settings button". Mine is set for 200 MB there. Glee is a smaller 40 MB. Go even smaller, if you want!

|
|
|
|
|
| ***

Did you remove (or not execute) that Deltree..?..
deltree /y c:\windows\ff*.tmp

If so, the article did say you would get two of them each boot...
......Quote...........
SYMPTOMS
After you install Office 2000, you may notice files whose name begins with "fff" appearing in your Windows folder. For example, the file name may be similar to "fffeeecf_{44BE8B61-235B-11D2-8E66-D59A4E66D32D}.tmp". Also, every time you restart your computer, two more files beginning with "fff" appear in your Windows folder.
......EOQ.............

If you DON'T get them, fine! Otherwise, do as the article said. You do not need the Deltree for that.

|
| 7. deltree /y c:\windows\history
| ***
| All gets cleared up upon execution of the Clean.bat file. I do not see much

| ‘You may also... Internet Options, General tab, set "Days to keep pages in
| History" to zero. (But you won't be able to see where you've been easily,
| after that.) ‘

So, set days to keep at zero, & remove the Deltree!

|
| 8. deltree /y c:\windows\cookies
|
|
| ***

I think you will NOT get the pop-ups, unless you set it to "Prompt". Set them to "Block".

|
| 9. deltree /y c:\windows\recent
| ***
| It gets cleared up, nicely.
| ***
|
| Your suggestion:
| ‘RECENT can be turned permanently off with a Registry tweak...
| "START button, Run, RegEdit", & navigate to...
| HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer
|
| That is,
| (a) Click plus signs, beginning left of "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" & ending left of
| "Policies".
| (b) Click "Explorer" in the left pane, not it's plus sign (if any).
| (c) Right-Clk in the right pane, & select "New, Binary Value".
| A name for the value is requested by highlighting "New Value #1".
| (d) Paste or type "NoRecentDocsHistory" over "New Value #1".
| (e) Right-Clk "NoRecentDocsHistory", & select "Modify"
| (f) Type... 01 00 00 00
| (g) Exit, & it may be necessary to reboot.
|

| I followed your instructions, PCR, and deleted entries accordingly. So far,
| so good. Nothing has been shown on the ‘Recent Folder’ nor in Documents from
| Start|Documents. Success, maybe?
| ***

That is good! Sounds successful to me!

|
| 10. deltree /y c:\windows\spool\printers
| ***
| Same as in line 9. I see no special reason for this, since printing is not
| an everyday need, for the usage of the Computer.
| ***

OK. One more Deltree gone!

|
| 11. del c:\WIN386.SWP
|
|
| ***

Good!

|
| 12. del c:\windows\WMPLIB~1.db
| ***
| This File does get inflated. I do not know if there is a limit. Clean.bat
| does its job.
| ***

I don't know precisely what that one is. (Mine is 644 KB-- wmplibrary_v_0_12.db.) There might be something in WMP's menus to control it. If you are a frequent user of WMP, you might really want to keep it. (I don't know.)

|

Nah. Much of the alternative is a setting that need be done only once!

| Ccleaner that Gekko suggested is a lot easier to use, but I see that it is
| not as thorough.
| Again, these are my assumptions..

Default BAT Deltrees (Att. CPR)

I will see what I can do.

| Not sure at all why this line is there.

It's necessary when in Pure DOS (as opposed to Windows DOS in a box) to SPEED up hard drive access CONDISERABLY. It is a disk-caching utility.

| I understand and thank you for the tips, but do not feel comfortable
| preventing deleted files from going to the Recycle Bin. There have been
| several times when I had to restore some Files that had been deleted
| unintentionally.

Yea. BUT, do you open the Bin & examine the files inside before you go to DOS & Deltree it? I hope so! Then, right there, just empty the Bin in Windows!

Finally, you know, everyone should have a full system backup too!

| However, the fact that Clean.bat leads to the hiding of them
| without the option for restoring any of them , could pose a problem, if I
| were to fail to check the listing of them before executing it.
| ***

Right! It isn't a pretty thing to see invisible files in the Bin in Windows! A Deltree of an occupied Bin will do that! Then, it does appear emptying the Bin fixes it. But I don't like it!

| 3. deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1
| (You recall that this Folder was Tempor~2)
| ***

Yes! Good! Glad you are normal now, BAP-- or somewhat closer, anyhow!

Go even smaller, if you want!

....snip... All that was normal.
| However, the Index.dat, from whatever size it may have,
| it is deflated down to 48KB, whenever I execute Clean.
| ***

I think it goes to 32 KB, but won't stay small long.

| Your observation:
| ‘You may set Temporary Internet Files to delete automatically, at... Control
| Panel, Internet Options, Advanced tab, Security section.’
|
| ***
| I would not know what would be safe to do with the options available in the
| Security Section and I rather leave it alone.

You can check that one box to no ill effect. You won't be able to browse offline without TIFs, is all. I think it better to play with the slider (above), though, to control the size of TIFs.

| Often, I open the IE and Delete
| Cookies and Internet
| Files, Clear History and, in the Content Menu, I go to Auto Complete and
| Clear Forms and Passwords.
| ***

That is good! Much better than a .bat full of Deltrees! As Phillipson said, Deltrees are a troubleshooting measure to be done only when necessary.

....snip
|
| ***
| I have no clue about Clear Forms and Passwords. Cookies, History and
| Tempor~1 Folders are cleared of created files, except that Index.dat files,
| in Cookies and Tempor~1, remain untouched, as they retain the same size.

Presumably, though the size remains the same for some of these, they are empty of data-- just an empty cookie jar!

| After Clean.bat, from whatever size they had before, they are reduced to 16KB
| and 48KB, respectively. I assume these sizes are the default minimum.
| ***

I don't remember. If they are reduced, it won't be for long!

|

| 5. deltree /y c:\windows\tmp
|
| Your observation:
| | deltree /y c:\windows\temp
| | deltree /y c:\windows\tmp
|
| ‘ ....that is needed to complete an install. ‘
|
| ***
| Understood! I have no clue about either. No objection about taking the lines
| out.
| ***

Keep an eye on C:\Windows\Temp. If it gets very huge report back. Something like Watt does is conceivably appropriate for that one, to delete contents only after a boot. Just that one!
