Default mouse left-click disabled?

First, sorry for any lack of details. I'm posting this as
a stop-gap to help (hopefully) my father, so he doesn't
have to pay a tech.

All he can get out of his mouse is right-click to open
the options menu. Left-click doesn't work to select
anything on it, to get rid of the menu itself or to click
into any program. It's not just disabled in windows
either. He started up GIBBS (sp?) and again, only the
menu appeared when he tried to move designs around, and
still nothing from the left.

Is this something he could have enabled without knowing?
Does anyone know how to get rid of it? Thanks.

It is possible that the mouse is bad. If he doesn't have an extra mouse to
try, have him do this:

Right click the start button and holding down the shift key, click o (oh).
Right click the control panel " (same as above)
Right click the mouse " (same as above)
Click the right arrow key to move the dot to the left handed mouse box and
click enter.

If the right mouse button acts as a double click (select) and the left
button does not produce the context menu, the mouse is shot.
