Look for many CAB files and SETUP.EXE in the same folder. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

: someone deleted the system.ini files, "themes" files and Win 98 locate lots of ".exe" and command files. I need to reinstall Win 98, I think. Can it be restored somehow and can it be done manually or do I need the Win 98 disk?? Your installation cab files may be on your hard drive. Open Windows Explorer. Under "View" pick folder options. Scroll down and make sure "Show all files" is selected, and make sure those no tick in the "Hide file extensions for known file types. Then, in Windows Explorer, go to Tools and Find. Type in win98*.cab. If it finds a big slew of win98 cab files, then notice what folder it found them in. Typically they are in Windows\Options\Cabs. Note the folder and then reboot your computer, tapping F8 or the control key before you get the "Starting Windows 98" notice. This should bring up a menu from which you should pick Command Prompt Only. If the folder you found the cabs in was windows\options \cabs, then at the C: prompt type "cd windows\options\cabs". Otherwise type in the path to the folder you found the cab files in. Hit enter and your prompt should change to c:\windows\options\cabs (or whatever the correct path was). Then type "setup" and the reinstallation should start. When it asks what directory you want to install Windows in, make sure it says c:\windows. Change it if it doesn't already say that. You will need your 25 character Product Identification Number at some point. If you don't have it then you need to find it in your registry before you even start the process. If you need to do this, then while in windows, go to Start, Run, and type in "regedit" Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr ent Version. In the right hand pane look for "ProductId". Copy down the number, close everything and then start the process above. When it gets to the point of asking for the number, type it in, and then "Sit back and relax" as it will tell you. If ther cab files are not on your hard drive, then you will need to boot your computer with the Windows 98 startup disk. If you don't have one, you can make one from Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, "Startup Disk" tab. Pick the first choice (Start computer with CD-ROM support). When it gets booted you'll see above the A: prompt what drive letter was assigned to your CD-Rom. Be sure you have your Windows 98 CD in the drive. Then type E:setup (if E was the drive assigned to the CD). Follow the instructions above to do the reinstall. You will still need the Product ID number. Good luck! -- --- I haven't lost my mind. It's backed up on disk somewhere. --- |

Use System File Checker, to do so type 'sfc' (minus quotation marks) in the

Can it be restored somehow and can it be done manually or do I need the Win 98 disk?? Did you check the Recycled Bin? If they are still in there you can just double click them to 'restore' them. Does Windows seem to work OK overall? Is the System.ini file itself missing or just some items inside it? What are the error messages? Perhaps you will get a fairly easy fix with better information. |
