Audio Driver and Memory Manager Problems

Hi to all, again......

I am continuing to attempt to clean up my system after my recent
computer meltdown (see "Internet Connection Problems"). I see the
following message, when I restart my computer in MS/DOS mode:

error: Memory Manager not detected.
PCI audio driver requires EMM386 or similar.
PCI audio driver NOT loading.

I did a Google search on "Memory Manager not detected" and there I found
an exchange involving Glen Ventura. His message directed the one in
need of help to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/229186 - Sound Blaster
Live! Error Message After Installing Windows. Well, there at the top of
this article were the exact words I was seeing on my screen. I followed
the instructions, and would you believe that my config.sys did not
contain any lines in it at all? I then added the lines to config.sys as
directed in paragraph 4 of this Microsoft article...that is:

device=windows\himem.sys
device=windows\emm386.exe

I again restarted my computer in normal mode, restarted again in MS/DOS
mode, and there was the same error message. I checked the config.sys
file for accuracy and it was correct.

Onward to another driver problem that keeps showing up at start up. The
"New Hardware Wizard" continues to inform me that it has found a "PCI
Multimedia Audio Device" and it is looking for appropriate drivers for
this hardware. In my mind I started thinking the two are connected;
and, yes, I do have a Sound Blaster card in my system.

Here is what I am seeing in the Device ManagerSound, video and game
Controllers:

Creative Gameport Joystick
Creative Labs Sound Blaster 128
Sound Blaster PCI 128 Legacy Device
Wave Device for Voice Modem

When I look at the Properties for each of the above lines, I see a line
that indicates that "The device is working properly.". I see no
indicators that anything is wrong in either normal or Safe Modes.


Now for my questions:

Is it possible that all of the above is really one problem?

Would it be wise for me to remove some or all of the four lines I found
in "Device ManagerSound, video and game Controllers"? I know that the
computer would find something on start-up, and I do have my original
Sound Blaster CD.

What do you recommend as my next safe mode of travel to resolve the
audio problems I outlined above?

Thanks for any advice sent my way on the above subject--all responses
are very much appreciated.

For PCR--I'm back on my 98SE machine, with just a little XP-irradiation.
I suppose it's okay for a Frog to be just a little green, don't you
think? I am still having problems getting my fingers on the right keys
and my brain (what there is left of it at this point)and fingers are
having some difficulty communicating at times. Do these effects
eventually wear off?

same error and new hardware messages.

Right.....the KB article describes the incomplete path for reasons beyond my
understanding. The FULL PATH should be used, as well as verified.

OOPS, my green fingers are still giving me some problems. I decided to
take another look at config.sys this morning, and there I found a space
where no space was supposed to be. That fixed, I now see the following
when restarting in MS/DOS:

The message that previously appeared in this window (i.e., error: Memory
Manager not detected, etc.) is now gone.

I continue to see the New Hardware window, however, looking for a driver
for PCI Multimedia Audio Device on startup.

Too bad it wouldn't just go away with the other. Here is what I usually
post for Audio driver problems...

Here is basically all I know of audio, except you may also look at a
list of audio devices/drivers in Device Manager. If you go that way,
BETTER be sure of what you've got now, so that you may change back to
it. To see what you've got now...

(a) "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab, Sound Video & Game
Controllers branch".
(b) D-Clk the devices under it, each in turn, for Properties.
(c) Click the Driver tab, & then click the "Update Driver button".
(d) Bolt "Display a list..", & click "Next".
What shows up in the "Models" box?
(e) Finally, bolt "Show all hardware".
What is lit up in both the left & right panes?

That is what is currently installed & active. If you choose others from
the left/right panes (& click "Next"), it will constitute an uninstall
of the old & an install of the new. Well, here is all I know...

When I do the following procedure, I am asked to supply drivers during
boot. I bypass the request, & end up with none. Then, I run an .exe
downloaded from Compaq, which puts them back in. Or, I go to a folder &
click a Setup.exe in there, when I want the older drivers.

The point is-- YOU may have to do it that way too. So, prepare.

(a) Boot to Safe Mode. (Enable Startup Menu at "START, Run, MSConfig,
Advanced button.)
(b) "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab".
(c) Open the "Sound, video & game controllers" branch, & delete all
devices under it. This is meant to eliminate "ghosts" of drivers
past, which are invisible in Normal Mode.
(d) Reboot to Normal Mode.
(e) Install your Sound Drivers, if they haven't automatically been
detected.

(4) If you are sure of Audio drivers you may have downloaded, that you
do have a method to reinstall them, then consider...

(a) "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall tab"
(b) If your Audio driver is mentioned there, uninstall it before
installing the new.

Your warning about having disks, etc., before proceeding with my audio
problems, has me a little uneasy about proceeding further. As you know,
I just made it through one traumatic situation with this computer, and I
don't think I'm up to another one at this time. The only thing I am
having audio problems with is the CNN/FOX news pages and some e-mail and
web pages. Part of this is probably caused by missing plug-ins in
addition to missing audio drivers. I again checked Device Manager in
Safe Mode today, and there were no problem indications noted. As I said
earlier, I think I am going to put this problem on the shelf for a
little while, until the recent past fades a bit.

Unrelated Question: Some time ago you helped me remove McAfee Virus-Scan
from my Registry. During that ordeal, you identified two programs that

of these programs? Both programs were lost during my recent system
meltdown. I found both programs to be good tools for this amateur
computer mechanic. Oh, I forgot to tell you why I need these
programs...I notice that I have many Netscape 4.7 entries in my
registry. Many of these items are pointing to non-existent
programs...Netscape is no longer on my system. I reinstalled Netscape
4.7 today and then removed it via Add/Remove, and the entries continue
to show up in the registry.

post for Audio driver problems...

Here is basically all I know of audio, except you may also look at a
list of audio devices/drivers in Device Manager. If you go that way,
BETTER be sure of what you've got now, so that you may change back to
it. To see what you've got now...

(a) "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab, Sound Video & Game
Controllers branch".
(b) D-Clk the devices under it, each in turn, for Properties.
(c) Click the Driver tab, & then click the "Update Driver button".
(d) Bolt "Display a list..", & click "Next".
What shows up in the "Models" box?
(e) Finally, bolt "Show all hardware".
What is lit up in both the left & right panes?

That is what is currently installed & active. If you choose others from
the left/right panes (& click "Next"), it will constitute an uninstall
of the old & an install of the new. Well, here is all I know...

When I do the following procedure, I am asked to supply drivers during
boot. I bypass the request, & end up with none. Then, I run an .exe
downloaded from Compaq, which puts them back in. Or, I go to a folder &
click a Setup.exe in there, when I want the older drivers.

The point is-- YOU may have to do it that way too. So, prepare.

(a) Boot to Safe Mode. (Enable Startup Menu at "START, Run, MSConfig,
Advanced button.)
(b) "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab".
(c) Open the "Sound, video & game controllers" branch, & delete all
devices under it. This is meant to eliminate "ghosts" of drivers
past, which are invisible in Normal Mode.
(d) Reboot to Normal Mode.
(e) Install your Sound Drivers, if they haven't automatically been
detected.

(4) If you are sure of Audio drivers you may have downloaded, that you
do have a method to reinstall them, then consider...

(a) "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall tab"
(b) If your Audio driver is mentioned there, uninstall it before
installing the new.

All right. I won't push it. All of that in my post worked well for me

volume control-- & suddenly all was well! I guess this computer became
fearful of what I might do next!

http://www.pcmag.com/ Has many, many great utilities: BHOCop, COA2,
ContextEdit, Crackup, DiskAction, EndItAll2, Folders, HDValet, InCtrl5,
ListZapper, RegDetective, RegEdit+, StartupCop, WinTidy, etc. Now,
suddenly, there is a subscription fee at PCMag, but, it's worth it,
especially if you can get the whole bundle that is there.

PCMag's "Registry Detective" (take "RegEdit+ too) is better than a naked
RegEdit search, because it will only find an item once, if there is a
"mirror" elsewhere. Also, it will find items in binary fields, which
RegEdit does not. Finally, it finds ALL matches in 10 seconds & puts
them ALL to the screen. There is a Details button for further
examination of the Key. The search criteria can be adjusted and narrowed
in various ways. There is a button to click that will get one into
RegEdit+ (or RegEdit) open to that Key. I only wish there were an easy
way to copy/post the Keys that were found in the search.

"RegEdit+" provides a configurable "Favorites" menu of Registry key
locations, undo for Registry changes, and an Address Bar into which one
may drop a Registry address. The docs are a Registry tutorial in itself.
