Default Opening images

For several days now, when I try to pull up websites with
images or .pdf formated images, the computer shows that
the pictures or pages are loading, then indicates "Done";
but all I get is a little square with a red X in it. What
must I do to correct this.

IE, tools, internet options, advanced tab, multimedia section, mark the box:
show pictures
