Default Illegal Operation w/ Explorer on Startup

When Windows loads i get an error message
saying, "Explorer has preformed an illegal operation and
must close." After the message popsup i no longer have
access to any desktop icons or my startup menu. Right now
i'm at a loss to how i can fix this problem. I tried to
reinstall software with my startup disk and that failed.
I really don't want to format my hardrive because i would
lose a lot of software that way. Any ideas?

Thanks for any advice you can give me

Boot to Safe Mode and check your startup items;

1. Re-start the computer
2. Press F8 when it says "Starting Windows"
3. Select "Safe Mode"

To check your startup items;

1. Go to "Start" and select "Run"
2. Type: msconfig
3. Select the "Startup" tab

Additionally, run a DOS based antivirus scanner such as F-Prot
