Default Problem with IE

Hi, I have Win98 and when launching IE I get an error message, so I'm
unable to login the Internet with it. I have tried the "repair"
option, and tried re-installing Win98, without wiping everything out.
I have also tried downloading and re-installing IE. Nothing works. I
can login using Firefox, so there's no problem with my connection.

Any suggestions about what can be done without total re-installation
of Win98? I have quite a bit ot other stuff on the disk and don't
want the hassle of starting fresh.

All suggestions appreciated.

1. A reinstall "over the top" which is what you did, seldom fixes anything
and often screws things up. I think you're headed for a reformat/clean
install, anyway. For one thing, you've likely broken more than one security
patch by overinstalling, Overinstalling overwrites many newer OS files (put
there by Updates) with older versions.

2. You left out the most important data: What's the error message, including
details?

3. This newsgroup is for issues dealing with setting up Windows 98. You have
what is primarily an IE problem. I recommend you take your issue to the IE
newsgroup(s).

Thanks Gary. The message is "Microsoft Internet Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience". Also, I have posted on the IE ng as you suggested.
Thanks again for your helpfulness.

Good luck. Sounds like an add-on component causing problems.

Go to "Control Panel", "Internet Options", click on "Security" and
raise the level as high as possible. If this doesn't help, reset security
to the default level, click "Start", "Run", type
http://www.windowsupdate.com into the "Open" box and click "OK".
If Windows Update opens, let it scan for and install any critical updates.

If you have any AOL add-on's remove them.

Also...try downloading any IE updates on another win98 machine...
then burn them to CD and install them on your problematic machine
