Default Win98SE, MS Config Startup is Empty

I was experimenting with a piece of software which was going to
organize my computer startup on Win98SE but actually wipes out
everything in MS Config Startup. How can I replace the essential items
(rundll.32, load power profile etc) plus my AVG Free, Microsoft
Intellimouse settings in MS Config without having to perform a "scanreg
/restore". I actually want to perform a "scanreg /restore" but the date
takes me back too far, 3 months, changes too many things. Is there a
way to "scanreg /restore" a day or so before this problem came up? I am
not of the computer generation so please make your reply easy to
follow. Thanks.

1. There are very few "essential items" in MSCONFIG.
(Some users would say none.) E.g. you do not load
RUNDLL except for specific (other) purposes, you may not
need Power Profile, etc. But the orthodox answer is that
you can configure many functions to load at boot (and
display in Systray) just by setting them up to do so --
one by one, each in turn.

2. SCANREG can be configured (via its INI file) to
save Registries at booting for any number of days (one
per day). These are displayed by SCANREG /RESTORE.
Default configuration is to save the last five Registries
(i.e. delete the sixth or oldest on loading today's.)
If the SCANREG dates are three months old you should
look for an error (in computer date, in SCANREG.INI etc.)
It will probably do no harm (a) to save today's Registry
via REGEDIT in case you wish to restore it, (b) to try in
turn all the Registry dates offered by SCANREG /RESTORE.

Have you checked the dates on all five copies of the backed up registry? As
Don points out, something is screwed up if your newest backed up registry is
3 months old. Unless you have downloaded a specific file to correct the
problem, W98 cannot go beyond 7 weeks without a reboot. A backed up copy of
the registry should be made each time you reboot (except if the settings are
screwed up).

Attached is a zip file with a with a couple of .reg files in it. Extract
the files and then right click, select edit, and you can view the entries it
will create in the registry. There are two different power profile entries
and they are in different run keys. To merge the date, right click and
select merge.

Thanks guys. Please forgive me for not getting back sooner but the
cable guy was here optimizing my Rogers internet connection. To be
honest, not being of the computer generation, I am having problems
figuring out what you guys are saying. To rephrase, is it possible,
simply, to put back those entries originally in MsConfig (I kow you can
make entries in Autoexec.bat), especially the three entries pertaining
to AVG (Test Centre, Email Scan, ?) free which is not functional when
my machine boots up, also the MS Intellimouse software which I have set
up for particular functions, I think the others were Scan Registry,
Scheduling Agent (which used to show up in the sys tray near the
clock), Load Power Profile, Sitmon??, eight in total. I am using the
Scanreg/Restore of Jan 01/07. The next closest is Oct 22/06. Ideally, I
want to restore Dec 28/06, which maintains my software the way I want,
also restores the MsConfig entries. About Dec 18/06, I was smart enough
to Norton Ghost my "C" drive, so everything is in tact on a number of
cd ghost images. If I were able to scanreg/restore to Dec 28/06, that
is the perfect solution. Thanks again. Ken.

Restoring the registry to a particular date requires a backup that was made
on that date. I suggest you check to see if the application you used has an
"undo" function or created a backup. Also, it is possible, though somewhat
difficult, to extract only the startup information from a registry backup, if you
think that one of the existing backups contains the configuration you want.

If the problem is that those items aren't starting automatically, the
simplest process is to look for an option within the application to enable
auto startup, or re-install them and check the option to autostart.

Since my previous message, I re-installed both AVG free and the
Microsoft Intellipoint 4.12 software. Now 4 out of my 8 entries are
back in MSConfig startup. I am now missing the 4 Win98SE entries. Are
all 4 necessary, if not which if any are essential or can I just
continue using my computer this way? Everything seems to be working
fine but I am no expert. Thanks, Ken.

SFC would not help, as it only considers the files that provide the
functionality, not whether it is being properly referenced during startup..
Removing then restarting or reinstalling the components should work.
