Default Replace W95 with W98SE

An old Compaq Presario P166 with W95 original, no disks with it.

It is a P166, I know from my old P166 that P166 runs W98SE fine.

This Compaq only has 40 MB RAM.

My original W98SE disk is for a fresh install.

1. How will W98SE run and browse the internet with only 40 MB RAM?

2. How to replace W95 with W98SE, can W95 be uninstalled, or do I have to
reformat?

TIA

It should work fine.

If you have an Upgrade Win98 CD or a full retail CD, you should be
able to upgrade your existing Win95 system. If you have an OEM disk,
it won't want to upgrade, and you may have to format the disk and
start from scratch. But look he

Your internet speed is governed by your modem. The system will run OK with
that ram--it would probably work better with 64 mb or more if the mobo will
take it. I suspect that it takes EDO ram and that might be hard to find (or
expensive) unless you can find a shop selling used parts. If I am right,
the ram must be installed in pairs.

I would do a clean install rather than an upgrade. Go to the HP web site
and see if there are W98 drivers for the hardware on the Compaq. For
information on installing W98, go to:

Thanks to Ron and Tim.

I looked on the site, lots of upgrades for the Compaq 8702 for W95, no
mention of W98. My W98SE CD is for a clean install, so if I format,
removing W95, the problem if occurring for W98 drivers would be with the
video card and modem, maybe? The sound card is not important to me. What
else would be effected? And a modem that will work with W95 would surely
work with W98?

TIA

Mike

This site has drivers for W95. I agree, it's likely they will work for W98.

Make sure the modem is a 56K. A lot of older W95 machines came with 36.8 K modems. If that was
the case, your Internet speed would be affected.

If you rename the win.com file something such as xwin.com, you can
install Windows 98 over Windows 95, but you will have to install all of
the software again.

However, the file structure will remain intact.

Windows 98 can run all right on 32MB RAM but 64MB is better.

As I am not expert, that sounds much better, is there any history on that,
or web pages? For one thing, IIRC, W98 is FAT 32, isn't W95 FAT 16?

I think your early reply is safest for me. This is a used computer. If I
install W98 over existing W95, whatever the previous owner did/did not do,
is still there. A format gives me a clean start, and I run a minimalist
system anyway, not all the default MS programs.

I plan to backup all the existing Compaq W95 drivers on floppies before I
reformat, so they may be of help when installing W98SE.
