Default probs with win98 wi-fi

Hello
I have the Wanadoo Livebox connected to an XPpro in the hallway.
My bedroom XPpro connects with the Inventel usb adaptor that came with the
package.
This all works well.
I also have an old Toshiba laptop with Win98se.
When my bedroom comp is not being used I'd like use the wifi adaptor on the
laptop.
So.. I used the Wanadoo cd to connect up the wifi.
This actually worked the first time and i d/lded updates for OE and IE from
Microsoft very quickly.
Alas since then i cant get the damm laptop to connect fully.
Even after i uninstalled IE6 and OE6 and Livebox.
Ran the Livebox instalation. No joy. It finds the 'adapter' OK but can't
connect.
I may be confined to bed for a while so the lptop would be very handy.
Sorry for the rambling
Cheers
Ted
