Default lost internet connection through NIC, now dials modem

Hi,
My friends system is a PIII - 450, WIN98SE.
The system has a NIC and a 56K modem
I set the system up so that it
connects to the internet through the NIC to a cable modem
They have AOL for broadband (yeah, I know, but they like it).

Recently, he upgraded AOL to the most recent version.
I think the problem started when he picked the modem as his
internet connection.
Now the system no longer recognises the NIC connection to the
internet. opening internet explorer results in a page not found error,
and starting AOL causes the modem to be dialed.
I called AOL help, they had me delete all the AOL internet
connections in teh AOL program and reset the internet connections
on internet explorer.
Still now help.

Can anyone give me advise on how to fix this and get the
broadband connection back up?

Thanks!
Stephan

Hi,

You need to call AOL again. There is a way to reset it, but it's AOL's
software. I had to do it for a client but it was a while ago and I don't
remember the procedure exactly. You have to force AOL's software to pick
a different Internet connection other than the modem. Seems there was a
drop down box somwhere in that very busy interface to manually select
the device, but sorry, I don't remember where. Hopefully when you call
them you won't get the same person who had you basically throw salt over
your shoulder to try and get it working. It was actually a pretty quick
procedure, but my memory is beginning to reflect my age.

I think I did that on the firtst AOL phone call.
I remmber a similar problem on another friend's computer, which
I was able to correct by re-installing IE6
I wasn't able to do the reinstall on my friends computer.

Hi,

You may have a problem with IE, but that would be separate from the
problem of selecting a device to connect to the Internet with. It's the
AOL software that initiates the selected device. If it is still trying
to dial using the 56k modem, then it is looking for the wrong device.

You can run a repair of IE by going to StartRun, then entering msinfo32
in the field and click ok. Along the top of that dialogue box, select
ToolsInternet Explorer Repair Tool, then select "repair" from the menu.
