Evil children?
Hi all,
A friend of mine who has a W98FE machine and a little daughter came to me and said "she just deleted a bunch of files, can you rebuild it?" I got the key id with jelly bean and copied the cabs subdirectory to another hd. Then I rebooted/repartitioned/ reformated the main drive into C and D. Then I copied back the cab directory to a directory on D drive I called WIN98. So far so good. C drive is clean/empty and is 4G and D is 2.1G and has the WIN98 directory from the old hard drive before reconfiguration. I went to the WIN98 directory and typed in "setup" and it wasn't there. I copied a SETUP.EXE file from anoher W98FE machine and when I type it in on the computer it came from I get the appropriate response. I copied the file to the WIN98 directory on the machine I am trying to reconfigure and the response I get is "just jumps back to the command prompt". I thought it might be that the scandisk program was absent but it is in fact in the WIN98 directory. What am I missing, why doesn't setup go through its' normal process? thanks for any hints, charles..... |

Charles: You need more than just the .cab files and setup.exe there are some other files (.exe, .dll, inf, .bin, .sys etc.) that are needed. Are they in c:\win98?? If so try changing to the win98 directory before you run setup: C:\ cd win98 Enter C:\WIN98 setup Enter HTH & GL John -- \\\||/// ------------------o000----(o)(o)----000o---------------- ----------------------------()-------------------------- '' Madness takes its toll - Please have exact change. Question is, what else is missing from the directory? Compare the two you
have. If setup.exe was missing, other things just as important may also be missing. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "***** charles" wrote in message et... If setup.exe was missing, other things just as important may also be missing I may be stuck transfering files over one at a time on floppy since there is no net connection between them or a cd burner. I did try to go to the WIN98 subdirectory before executing the command and it didn't help. thanks, charles...... Gary S. Try creating a new Windows 98 boot floppy.

message ... Try creating a new Windows 98 boot floppy. http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm Ben Already had one. Running SETUP.EXE from the C:\WIN98 subdirectory doesn't work unless one has all the correct files. I finally found a complete one on another computer so I was able to successfully rebuild the problem child. By the way, jellybean(keyfinder) only runs on a Windows machine that has a running GUI, no command line stuff. later..... "***** charles" wrote in message et...
