Windows Error Protection
Aaaargh!
Excuse an English teacher's frustration... When my power supply died, I put in another one and everything started up nicely except for the modem, which is recognized by the diagnostics, but would not dial out. I piddled around to try to get it to work, and at some point an install driver message came in (I don't remember why), and from that point on I have been getting a "Windows Protection Error," not only on that drive, but on another one that I multiple boot to from the bios. A third drive, which I didn't mess with - just deleted the Modem driver and nothing else - works fine with a new modem, so the hardware side of it is OK. I went though every one of the steps from the Microsoft site, using msconfig and deleting things from the config manager, but nothing seems to work. It comes up fine in safe mode, but not in anything else. For awhile disabling things in the system section of the config manger seemed to work, but then plug and play would put something in and the error message would come again. How can I find out what is loading that causes this fault? I look at the bootlog file, but it's Greek to me. When I look at the end of the bootlog file, I got this "terminate" stuff, but I don't know what terminated it. What should I do? I'm quite competent about roaming around hard drives, but don't know where to roam at the moment. Thanks... Is this the right forum for this info? Jim |

Windows Error Protection
HI!
Thanks... I did remove the modem at the "remove programs" place, but not until after I had screwed up the computer. Would there be references to it in the register that I could get rid of? or in the "ini" files?
