Default 98se Startup problem after instal usb card reader

I just installed a new usb multi card reader on my 98se drive ( have a
dual boot 98se-fat32/xp pro-ntsc, on separate hdd's).

Installed as 'unknown device' as could not install drivers & I could
not find the right ones on the disk that came with the reader, so I
manually tried to install anything that looked appropriate.

Ended up installing something called 'Generic - USB Card Reader' in
Program Files- which only put a 'disk monitor' icon in the bottom right
taskbar. Hmmmmm! - didn't look right so I uninstalled it..... Reboot

Now here is the Problem... on reboot when I select '98se' from the dual
boot option... Windows 98se starts to load up but then goes to a "
Windows Set up Wizard" asks for a name then asks for the product key
to install Windows from the start!!!.... I cancel at this point.

Tried to boot into 'Safe mode' but get the same thing?????... I can
boot into the XP pro drive ok.
HELP!!!!!...... Have I lost everything on my 98se drive? (ps. I can
still read all my 98se files from the xp drive- just can't boot into
it....tried all the 'safe mode' options but end up at the 'Setup
Wizard")

Boot to DOS by hitting the F8 key immediatly after choosing 98SE from
the boot menu. From the DOS prompt, run-

scanreg /restore

Choose the registry that is dated the day of the incident, or if that
doesn't boot, do it again and choose the day prior.

When I hit F8, with all the options available in the black&white
screen, no matter what I choose, I get reverted back to the 'Windows
Setup Wizard' screen. I tried booting from a 98se startup disk-floppy,
but it gets to 'verifying data pool' at the bottom of the screen , then
nothing happens.

I don't know...

(a) Enter BIOS Setup, & see whether you can ignore the card reader.
(b) Physically unplug the card reader.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287553/en-us
Error Message "Verifying DMI Pool Data" Occurs and the Computer Is
Unavailable
....Says it is a hardware error & to please contact the manufacturer.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315212/en-us
Error Message: No Valid FAT On Boot Drive
....Says it could be a virus.

The card reader does'nt show in Bios.
It was a USB removable type & it is'nt plugged in.
Ran a virus check on the 98se 'C' drive from the XP 'D' drive & nothing
was detected.
Also ran MS antispy & it was clear.

It's Fixed!!!!!

Tried several 98se boot/startup disks with no luck.

Managed to get a copy of ' Ultimate Boot Disk 98"... & this one
actually got to its own menus one of which was 'Fix Registry'... & I
was able to choose a restore point the day before all went belly up.

Thanks for all the help & suggestions.

You are welcome. Glad to hear it. Blanton was right, then.

I guess you cannot use that usb multi card reader until you get better
drivers for it on the Win98 side, if any. Or never boot to Win98 when it
is plugged in. OK, then.
