Default Windows 98se hangs on black screen during shutdown

The subject pretty much says it all, but this only happens when the computer
has been on for a few hours; if power it off after just a half hour, or
hour, it doesn't hang.

None of my devices conflict with each other. I do see an update available
for download.....a supplemental shutdown update, but it's from 1999? Also,
in the instructions to uninstall it, it makes reference to a file that does
not exist. Since this alters system files, I don't like doing something like
this, unless there's a way to reverse the changes.

That's the only problem I have; I don't have any reboot problems. I guess I
could end task out of everything except explorer and systray, but that's
kind of a hassle and surely that shouldn't be necessary each time.

Other than installing a 5 year old "update", which may or may not work, any
other ideas? Of course, when I restart the next time, it goes through
Scandisk, for which I let it, so it can correct any possible errors on the
drive.

There are many good articles out there which cover many of the things that
can cause shutdown issues like you are describing. Here's a very good
website to read up on all the things that you can check to isolate the
problem and be able to resolve it.
