Default stupid me... help me boot into previous registry??

To answer the OP's question about how to stop the boot process, at
least that is (IMO) slightly easier in '95 than '98: watch the
screen like a hawk, and when "STARTING WINDOWS 95" appears,
immediately press - and I've forgotten what; I think it is F5 or F8.

It's F8.

Thanks.

I don't think that is right. The .DA0 files are recreated after every
sucessful boot, sort of like the "Last Known Good" on NT systems. The
files are only as old as when Windows 95 was last sucessfully started.
You are probably thinking of the .1ST file, that one could be used if
all else failed, but as you said it might be rather old to do any real
good, it is a copy of the registry when Windows 95 was first
installed.

You're right, I probably was. Useful to know the .DA0 files are recreated
every successful boot - possible rescue mission option.

Default New mobos and '9x [was: stupid me... help me boot into previous registry??]

[]
thanks for all the great help guys... and sorry for not getting back
to you sooner... had some stomach virus sweeping thru the house...

That's OK - thanks for coming back eventually; many don't.

this computer had had some serious re-engineering before i inherited
it... there were some win98 some win95a some win95b... no win95c
thankfully...

but have it all sorted obviously...

this computer works... but i'm looking for a newer motherboard that
will still handle win98... any thoughts?

I suppose another good question would be "what should one look out for in
new ones that _won't_ work under '9x", or more significantly that will stop
'9x working?

I am a bit out of touch with mobo features lately; are there things that
will definitely stop '9x working, of just things that won't themselves work
under '9x?

Things to consider:
o mine (Asus or Abit, I can't remember) has some chip which I think gives
access to the BIOS under Windows. This won't work under '9x; I can't
remember whether it needs 2000 or XP. However, not being able to use it
doesn't seem to stop the mobo working. (I think the chip is called "Genius"
or "Guru" or something like that.)
o memory size - I've been reading this 'group for some time, and have picked
up that there are problems with '9x over a certain size (512M is it?). I
think they can be got round - either by ignoring the memory above the limit
when using '9x in a multi-boot system, or some other procedure. However, I
don't know if these workrounds can be used if single memory modules over
that size are present (I think they can).
o SATA - I _think_ this works under '9x, but am not sure.
o USB - I don't know if '9x works with USB 2.0 - I've seen conflicting
results here; I think it should work in at least 1.1 mode. (I'm not aware of
any ports that are 2.0 only.)
o hard disc size - workarounds are needed for discs over (I think) about
120G. Not really a mobo matter though.

I'm sure others can add mo basically, the OP really needs to know what
(if anything) will stop '9x working at all, and it would also be useful to
have a list of things that, while they won't stop it, won't in themselves
work.
