Default MVP Help Pls. Simple Dun connection & MSGSRV32.EXE

Hello

I encountered a problem I couldn't solve w/98se... a real can of worms!!
This was the worst for me, I did 2 fresh installs of 98se and each time the
problem resurfaced and was a nightmare!! I had no alternative and installed
W-XP

My problem was w/MSGSRV32.EXE. I've been installing and using the same
procedures for yrs. now. After the install I get devices set up, have
everything I need to do this easily. I'm on dial-up and I make a simple DUN
connection, no ISP s/w to make a new connection, don't use the ICW. Only
install DUN and Phone for networking services. I dial-up ISP, I'm ok. Next I
run the complete setup for IE6-SP1, do my settings for IE and I install my
a/v, and dial-up again and get the big first update for my a/v program, next
I configure my firewall. I install Spyware Blaster, Spybot, & Ad-Aware
Personal. Next I proceed to WU.

Has anyone reported a problem like this ???
I have my DUN, connection is good!!
No problems....
I install IE6-SP1 and my nightmare begins!!
Note: the install for IE6-SP1 is totally successful!!
My problem is w/MSGSRV32.EXE

I check all my settings, same settings for yrs., same ISP.
I look at IE connection settings, modem, etc. all good!!
I click the launcher and dial, the dial part didn't seem to be the problem,
but at the server verification point a lockup occured, but the connection
would be made, very strange!!
I would do a ctl/alt/del and see MSGSRV32.EXE highlighted.
I would end it, end task.
I would wait a few seconds, the machine would unlock my connection icon
would drop into the system tray.

I could open OE and even bring my mail down, however the machine was
crippled... couldn't do much else. If I closed
OE, could open fldrs. or My computer, etc... This was h---!!

After 2 fresh installs, and not being able to fix it... I installed Win-XP
Prof.

I appreciate help, I do want to solve this... but I need a working puter and
really need help!!

Thanks, Star

Hi Star,,,,
I am so looking forward to comments to your post. I get bemused myself
at situations where one instal differs from another yet there are no
changes in the instal mannerism........... Windows can be a strange
product, it confuses many and befuddles others.
Have my 'watch' set to your post.
Btw, you and I are very similar in the way we do an initial setup, right
down to dun too. (i'm on dialup).

Hi Hugh,
No, I didn't turn server verification off.... my server requires
verification, however I'm blessed that they don't require s/w. For 4 days,
I just couldn't figure it out. Rechecked all settings many times. I did
several install/repairs for IE6-SP1, reinstall components, etc... I
extracted MSGSRV32.EXE using SFC quite a few times. I uninstalled &
reinstalled components, phone & dun several times. It just made no sense,
I've done the same setup more than a dozen times, what a can of worms???

So, I abandoned my new install, prepared the hd and reinstalled. I
carefully worked w/my new install, I installed the modem device only and did
the simple dun, I'm ok. I have to install IE6-SP1 or I can't install a/v
s/w... Pc-cillin 2005 requires it. I run IE6-SP1 and the problem resurfaced.
I tried for another 5 days to troubleshoot!!

The machine was crippled.... after I ended the task of MSGSRV32.EXE. I
did/could open & actually use OE, set up mail & news accts., etc... I even
wrote a desperate post to this ng 2-3 wks. ago, however I must bring in old
post threads to try and find it, haven't found it yet!!

I could disconnect connection, the puter wouldn't shut down or restart, blue
screens of death, could hit return and go back to desktop, however, Explorer
was not working, could not open folders or My computer, etc...

I surely can't be the *only one* who has had this problem, I had no Win.
UD's yet on either new install.

What could be going on.... have you ever heard of a problem like mine ??? I
don't recall ever reading anything like my problem being posted in this ng
before, and I've been reading it for many years!!

Thank you,
Star

Let's eliminate something right up front.

Are you CERTAIN that you are not infected
by the MYDOOM virus?

Do you have a file named MSGSVR32.EXE on your PC?

You should NOT have.

Hugh,
Ooops....
snip

Let's eliminate something right up front.

Are you CERTAIN that you are not infected
by the MYDOOM virus?

**Sorry, its this running process....
msgsrv32.exe is a process which is initiated by Microsoft Windows 9x and ME
only. It acts as a 32 bit message server and will never appear in the
Windows task list unless there is a problem with it. At any other time it
should be left enabled.

Do you have a file named MSGSVR32.EXE on your PC?

**No

You should NOT have.

**No, it was a typo!!
No, I run Trend Micro, Pc-cillin, have for more than 5 yrs. now, never no
virus ever... Pc-cillin and Trend Micro has always taken good care in
protecting my puter.

**Note, I'm presently using OS W-XP Prof. I want a dual boot system again
and will be reinstalling 98se. I barely have XP up, ran SR2, have a/v,
Spyware Blaster, Spybot and Ad-aware, and all devices and all the 24
priority UD's. I'm trying to find the fix for my problem, I didn't have a
functional puter for 2 wks.

Thanks, can you tell me anymore about my problem?

Star

See if something here helps:
http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/ermsgs32.htm

Also, if you plan to keep XP and then install 98 as a second OS in a dual boot,
you'll have a little more work to do. Win98 should be installed before XP to
avoid the extra work. For info see:
http://thpc.info/dualboot.html

Hi Rex,
Haven't been in the ng for several days, sorry!!
I see Hugh, MVP has not replied back, but Brian, MVP has!!
I'm sure no virus or trojan or malware was involved!!
I never went on the Internet except once on my first install, only to my ISP
site and Pc-cillin was installed and updated. I didn't even go to Trend
Micro site, I can do the first big update for Pc-cillin without doing so.
It just doesn't make sense to me and I was very descriptive of my problem
and have been doing this for yrs.
I made the same simple dun on W-XP, however I didn't have to run and
install IE-6.
Before I ran IE6-SP1 I had a good dun connection. I had to run IE6-SP1 to
move forward, to install a/v software, Pc-cillin won't install w/o the
upgrade.
I don't know why msgsrv32 was giving me problems and it crippled my machine,
had to end it repeatedly... like I explained, the dialup went good, it
seemed to go bad at the point of verication logon, it would lockup. I did
ctl/alt/del and end msgsrv32 and instantly it would unlock, the connection
icon would drop to the system tray.... but the machine was crippled and
unstable. I actually opened OE, set up accts. but the puter was not working
good period and I couldn't fix it even with 2 fresh installs.

Hopefully, more input will be forthcoming in this thread, and I still have
much hw to do. I'm having printer problems now w/HP printer and have been
working to resolve it. HP techs are tying to help me, the initial install
failed. I love my mf printer, the s/w install pkg. is a pita, however I
never had any problems installing it on 98se, so see, you just can't know
when Windows is going to smack you on the side of the head!!

Have a G-R-E-A-T day,
Star

Hi Brian,
I've done the dual boot once, it was a good experience... no problems. The
first time is scarry on everything w/Windows expecially installs. I still
remember the first time I prepared a drive, used MS FDisk and still use it.

Yes, I would have to go down and prepare the hd, use MS FDisk and make fat
32. Duh, I could understand MS FDisk completely, it made perfect sense to
me. I wish everything else regarding Windows would make the same perfect
sense!!

I would install W98-se first which puts itself on the C:\primary active
partition.

Brian, can you give feedback regarding this post and my problem w/msgsrv32.

Thank you,
Star

Star,

MSGSRV32.EXE is only the messenger, not the problem. MSGSRV32 carries
system messages from one place to another, whether between two programs
or between programs and hardware, etc. The reason MSGSRV32 shows up in
End Task lists when there's a problem is usually that it has been
prevented from delivering whatever message it's been charged with
delivering. It sits there waiting for acknowledgement from the app or
driver that it's delivered a message to, but the app involved is
ignoring it. So, yes, the immediate reason for a "Not Responding"
message is that MSGSRV32 is "stuck", but that's not MSGSVR32's fault.
It's just a symptom of some other problem.
