Default USB drivers crash 98SE

I'm trying to install a pci usb card in an HP vectra PI 133. when i boot
windows 98se up with the card installed it detects it and prompts for the
drivers. i choose the defaults for the locations of the drivers and it uses
the generic usb.inf file from windows. then i get a blue screen reporting a
kernel.vxd crash. when i reboot i get a blue screen telling me there's a
memory parity error. i have no reason to believe this message - the system
runs fine otherwise without the usb card. i tried another usb card and got
the same results. one of the cards is a usb 2.0 ALi based card from iogear,
the other a usb 1.1 belkin card. the pci slot seems to be good because i
tried other devices in it such as a network card and it worked fine. i've
done all windows updates. anybody seen this problem before? thanks for the
help.

Hi,

As clearly mention by you that you tried installing 2 different cards one
usb 1.1 and another usb 2, we cannot really conclude the windows 98 does not
support both of these devices. But, to be on the safer side, here's what I
suggest.

There's something called Windows HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) where in
you can check which device drivers are compatible with your windows, and if
they are not compatible you can upgrade existing drivers with HCL drivers.

Try following the Microsoft link
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;131900
and post back if it worked or not.

Thanks,
ShadyTech.

Thanks,
ShadyTech.

The Shady rest hotel, I think I could be comfortable there,
especially with a shady tech on-board, and especially one who
says 'thanks'.

Hi,

I think we are forgetting the purpose of all of us being here. Those who
don't know and those who have forgotten, let me refresh. We aren't here to
discuss with what kind of names we come in here, the way we thank or say good
bye.

The primary and the sole purpose of us coming together is to look for help
and to give help or give your suggestion about the problem at hand, so that
others can gain from our comments and suggestions.

People who feel the same way, as I do, please post your comments about the
same and let *others* know who seem to have lost focus. Come on, lets stay on
track and lets not do what we are NOT supposed to do.

Thanks,
ShadyTech.

A memory parity error is generated at the bios level. Windows is simply
reporting it.
