Default re-installing win98se for fonts

In a previous question here I asked about why my system seems to default to
an italics font. The answers I got regarding changing
properties/appearance/themes or schemes etc etc did not work, but thanks for
the effort.

I have also examined several of my fonts at control panel/fonts and they all
seem to be ok.

When searching this issue in google, one or two places mention that
installing a program may cause some fonts to "point" towards others and when
that program is uninstalled, it leaves the font pointing to nothing, which
apparantly then defaults to italics. I dunno how that works or how to fix
that.

So, I think I must now go to the point of re-installing win98se. Will than
screw up my systems, and my installed programs? Will I lose all the upgrades
to IE and other MS progs?

I tried to just re-install fonts in Windows setup, but I could not find
fonts as one of the elements.

The problem lies somewhere at system level I'm certain. When I look at a web
page some of the fonts are italicized, but when I use another machine they
are not. When I do a seearch in google the search phrase is italicized. Even
some of the buttons on the google page have italicized fonts, yet, again,
when I use a different computer, they are not.

I've done latest virus scans and bot cleanups.

I reallly think all I can do now is re-install windows, but I do not want to
dramatically change my system.

Any suggestions?

try downloading tweakui , and use its "repair" function to repair your font
folder (it might do it : )

I downloaded and tried the repair font folder, but no change. Thanks but it
didn't work. It seems like a good tool to have tho'.. So what do you think
about re-installing win98se ?? is that gonna screw up my system? IE? Outlook?

Thanks

Yes, you will lose upgrades to IE as you will revert to IE5.0
You will lose any operating system upgrades as well.
I cannot recommend a reinstall over the top.

I glanced at your previous posts and it was unclear what your problem
was. It is obviously not in a scheme but if you look in Control
Panel-Display, exactly what do you see in italics?

Look at these and see if they help.

Also, look at Win.ini
You can use Sysedit (Start-Run-Sysedit)
Copy and paste in your message the section:
[FontSubstitutes]

Mine looks like this:
[FontSubstitutes]
Helv=MS Sans Serif
Tms Rmn=MS Serif
Times=Times New Roman
MS Shell Dlg 2=MS Sans Serif
Monotype.com=Andale Mono
Helvetica=Arial
MS Shell Dlg=MS Sans Serif

Any differences?

Too bad Themes/Schemes didn't get it. Originally, you said...

| Now I can't read the tabs on the "Display Properties" or the menus in
| Microsoft Word or the menus in Intenet explorer.

Now, you add...

| When I do a seearch in google the search phrase is italicized. Even
| some of the buttons on the google page have italicized fonts, yet,
again,
| when I use a different computer, they are not.

It could well be Edwards is your man. Anyway...

(1) I see no italics at Google. But for that one, have you checked your
settings at "IE, Tools menu, Internet Options, Fonts button"? I am...

(a) Language Script: Latin Based.
(b) WEB Page Font: Tahoma.
(c) Plain Text Font: Andale Mono.

And, at the Accessibility button, I am only checked to "Ignore font
sizes...".

(2) Play with "IE, View Menu, Encoding", where I am set to Auto-Select.
It appears to choose "Unicode (UTF 8)".

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,

In your previous question you also mention Outlook Express being
affected (¿Is it only in IE and OE you see this?) and i don't
know if OE-style can be distorted by the use of CSS. But for IE
check if this have been activated.

IE 6.0.x : Tools : Internet Options : General :
