Win98Se - How to install from scratch so that all cab files are coppyied to a directory on the C: drive
Does anybody know how to start the installation of Win98SE (from scratch,
ie. DOS promt) so that I get all the cab files copied into a diretory on the C: drive. I want to have the files on the C: drive so I do not need to have the CD in the CD-ROM drive everytime I install new hardware. I did this for Win98 some 8years ago but have forgotten how to do it, besides I do not know if SE is different or if there will be an option for this after I have started the installation? Any help is appeciated Thanks Steven Additionlaly: (before Microsoft removes these downloads from the web...) 1.) Does anybody know how to download the latest edition of Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 ( I belive this is the latest for W98SE?) instead of installing it directly to my Win98SE I would like to keep the download as a backup (in case Microsoft finally decides to stop all downloads for W98) 2.) Does anybosy know how to donwload Win98SE Service Pack1 (I do not think this is included in my Win98SE CD) Again I want the files downloaded complete before I start to inbstall them so I can keep thme as backup in case of a reinstallation Is there any other vital W98SE downloads I should be aware of before it is too late? |

Boot to the floppy startup disk and run the following commands. (Assumes
your CD drive has been assigned the letter E. Also assumes you've already partitioned the disk if necessary): FORMAT C: /S C: MD WIN98 COPY E:\WIN98\*.* C:\WIN98 Remove the floppy and restart. Additionally:
1. http://tinyurl.com/6zjbm 2. IIRC, there isn't a Service Pack for 98SE, only for FE. That said, and on a tangential note, I offer a set of CDs (2) that contains all updates for WIN98, WIN98SE and ME. One is the CD that MS shipped in Feb 2004, which includes IE 6 SP1, the other is all the remaining Updates that were issued after that date. Email me at updates_at_grystmill.com. (replace _at_ with @) I ask $3 to cover costs. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "Steven Siegler" wrote in message ... Thanks!
I only have the startup disk for Win98. Can I stil boot and run FORMAT C:/S from this disk? And then copy all the WIN98 files from the Win98SE CD and proceed? Could this cause a future problem? Win98Se - How to install from scratch so that all cab files are coppyied to a directory on the C: drive
Generally, the startup disk for Win98 will include drivers to support your
CD, but if not then you can get a new startup disk he www.bootdisk.com The W98SE installation procedure will update any system files the /S option installs. But considering how easy it is to download and create a new disk from that site, there's no reason not to get the right one for the OS you intend to install. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Steven Siegler" wrote in message ... Yes, the original Win98 floppy disk is fine. Could this cause a future problem? (i.e. having the system files from the older Win98 version?) No problem. The files aren't different in this case, and they get overwritten, anyway. With the Win98SE cd, is it possible to make a new startup disk? -If so, how? There are at least three ways: 1. You make one from within a Win98SE OS, using Add/Remiove Programs. 2. You do this one: http://www.putergeek.com/win98_boot/ 3. Download one from www.bootdisk.com -- Gary S.
