No newtwork adapter for usb cable modem
am trying to install a Motorola SurfBoard Cable Modem SB
5100 on my windows 98 machine using USB. The modem seems to install ok , in that it appears under system devices etc. However when I load the connection software from my ISP, it cannot detect the modem. Apparently it may have something to do with the IP address. I was advised to run winipcfg from the 'Run' option on the menu and then release the ip for the modem BUT when I do this the modem does not appear in the list of network adapters. The list show only one adapter called 'PPP...'. Does anyone have any advice on how I might fix this problem? I have unistalled and re installed the modem several times . Thanks, Peter |

I have a SurfBoard SB5100E that i used connected through the USB port a while back even though my ISP only gave instructions to use the Ethernet port. It worked great. I use Ethernet now and thus don't have a USB cable connected so nothing related is showing up in winipcfg. But check your Network ControlPanel applet. There i still have a Network Adapter "Motorola SURFBoard SB5100 USB Cable Modem" and a protocol "TCP/IP" - (bound to that adapter). And i used the "Client for Microsoft Networks" client bound to the protocol. Maybe try to "Add..." the adapter from here if it is missing, just to try another approach. -- Please followup in newsgroup. E-mail address is invalid due to spam-control. |

Hi, A variation on your solution did the trick. Thanks for your help! cheers, I'll drink to that. Whatever works. Happy internetting. Eventually consider adding a Hardware Firewall, e.g. inside a Router. That seems to be the general advice for people with relatively highspeed internet connections. -- Please followup in newsgroup.
