Default Windows Me and RAM

Is it true, upgrading RDRAM from 256 to 512 is wasting money because Windows
ME does not use memory efficient?

I had crisis a few days ago and reinstall windows me on my Dell 8100 which
has P4 1.5 GHZ, 256 MB RDRAM.

So it has no junk right now. From my lesson, I got Spybot and Ad-aware
loaded for the first time. Beside that, I have zone alarm.

I have only one game soft ware installed which is Neverwinter night.

Now I can tell this game runs very slow with "heavy pointer". It responds so
slow like never seen before. That is why I am thinking about RAM upgrade.

On the other hand I wonder because those new protective soft ware working
behind, computer is busy.

Please advice me.
Thanks.

Totally and utterly false. Win Me can use up to 2GB of RAM and has
without doubt the best memory manager of any Win 9x operating system. It
is however essential to limit the amount of memory used as virtual cache
to 512MB as otherwise the system will run out of upper memory address
space.

To limit vcache, open system.ini and add the lines
[VCache]
MaxFileCache=512000
Note that this will still mean that all memory is available to
applications but is simply limiting the amount used as virtual cache
memory See KB 253912 - ""Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large
Amounts of RAM Installed" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=253912).

See also MS KB 304943 - "Computer May Reboot Continuously with More Than
1.5 GB of RAM" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=304943).

Following up, your new Zone Alarm is running at startup (hopefully) as is
the AV tool, but the free Ad-aware SE 1.05 and SpyBot 1.3 are "on demand"
programs which do not usually execute in the background. You launch them
when desired, like the defragmenter.
I suggest installing the free "Process Explorer" from System Internals, to
report all executing processes, and examine for undesired ones:
www.sysinternals.com

Compare with
" http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html

" Reprinted with permission from Paul Collins who owns the copyright to
the list. CastleCops also adds additional items that may not be in the
original list but attempts are made to ensure the original is also
updated. The full HTML list is here(http://castlecops.com/sl-all.html).

*** CastleCops is now hosting the official Pacs-portal forums.*** "

That page, and this one : The CLSID / BHO List / Toolbar Master List
http://computercops.biz/CLSID.html
are THE most up to date Startup/CLSID,etc. lists that exist on the
net,AFAIK.

When you think everything is in place as desired, go to PC Pitstop and run
its evaluation tool to find any obvious errors and bottlenecks:
