Default very slow boot up

friends computer screen reads ' windows could not upgrade
the file %1 from %2 %1 : %2'
this line sometimes repeats for six minuits or more before
showing another message that says 'press any key to
continue'. i push 'space bar' and it opens desktop OK.

also, cannot run 'ScanDisk". message says 'tried ten time -
some other program is writing'.

also, cannot run 'Disk Defragmenter. no message but
progress slide flashes 1% then starts over repeatedly.

doing these things for a year now. any suggestions ?
thanks - jim

Your %1/%2 error is caused usually by Norton LiveUpdate, corrupting the
System Restore archive - although there are other possible causes. Do a
Search for the file WININIT.INI - if you find it, then rename it to
WININIT.JNK, and reboot - your problem should be gone.

If you don't find it, then try this - Start|Run - enter SCANREG /FIX into
the dialog box, and click OK - windows will reboot - see if that fixes it.
If not, then do a Search on your PC for files named '_RESTORE' (without
the
quotes) - you should find the C:\_RESTORE folder - r-click on it, and
select
Properties. How many files/folders are there? If it's around 64 thousand,
then LiveUpdate has been up to its tricks again, and you'll have to
completely remove the folder from DOS - use the following method, which
seems to be the easiest at present.

Reboot to DOS using your Startup disk enter the following commands at the
A:\ prompt.

ATTRIB -R -H -S C:\_RESTORE
REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST

remove the floppy, and reboot to normal windows. - your error should be
gone, and you should now have a new, single restore point. Go to Windows
Explorer, and delete the C:\OLDREST folder

You obviously have programmes running while you're trying
to de-fragment. The programme will keep being interrupted
because there is still writing to disk activities going
on! Do Ctrl+Alt+Delete and close all your programmes
except Systray & Explorer, then de-fragment and scan-disk
again. You'll have to re-boot afterwards to put things
back to normal. Hope this helps? Doreen

Noel,

I still don't understand how scanreg /fix is going to fix the problem. It may
prevent a recurrence once the problem has been solved but it won't get rid of
the %1 %2 error message.

You're right - but I leave it there for three reasons

1) It can't hurt - only help
2) It may help prevent a recurrence
3) At least two users have responded that it fixed the problem! - whether
because a registry entry was preventing proper use of wininit.exe or what
(including external/misunderstanding factors) I have no idea.

Your 3). This simply makes no sense whatsoever. :-( The registry isn't even
available to wininit.exe when this error message is generated. I suspect the
people concerned were confused.
