Setting up Windows98
Hi guys,
I'm currently working on a 133mhz computer which I'm trying to get up just so someone in the family can have something to listen to. Basically, here's my problem: I used the Win98 Boot Disk from www.bootdisk.com, used FDISK to delete the current active partition and then remade a new one in it's place. I then formatted c: and rebooted my computer. I left the BIOS set to boot in the order of A, CDROM, C - and when I booted up again, I selected the "Start computer with CD-ROM" option, and then it finally came to a command prompt. Once there, I typed in "e:" to move to the e drive. I then typed in "setup.exe" and got the dreaded "Bad command or file name" response. At first, I thought something might be wrong with the cd, so I ran a dir, and I can see all the files... but can't access them or something. I figure there might be something wrong with my cd-rom drive in that machine, but since I can run a dir, I'm assuming it's not. Anyway, any and all tips are appreciated. Thanks, Josh |

Yeah, I see it when I do a dir, but I can't access it for some reason.

Try R:\Setup and E:\setup. and F:\setup There is a Ram drive involved also that temporarily pushes the CDrom drive letter up one or two, as you know. Being specific by including the drive letter in the command may help even though a DIR works. The path is probably to A: and the Ram drive. Anyway, worth a try. The CDRom drive letter can be different depending on how the start up floppy
is made. See the instructions he http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "joshb" wrote in message ups.com... No good, When I boot up, it says the CD is in E:, but I still can't run
the setup.exe. I know my CD is a little scratched, maybe I should look into finding a replacement? |

Try running setup from the "Win98" directory. e:\win98\setup If that doesn't work, try the following and verify that the file is on the CD. dir /s e:\setup.exe Ben |

Take a look at the CD in the machine you are posting with. Is there a
setup.exe file and is it located where you think it is. On some, the file may be in a second level folder. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "joshb" wrote in message ups.com... There are two Setup.exe files on the CD. The one in the root is just a shortcut to the one in the Win98 folder. Try running that one as Ben suggested. E:\win98\setup If the scratch causes problems you can sometimes get around that by copying the Win98 folder on the CD to the HD and running Setup from there from Dos. From the C:\ prompt enter: MD \Win98 Copy E:\Win98\*.* C:\Win98 C:\win98\Setup.exe Regards, Bill Watt Computer Help and Information http://home.ptd.net/~bwatt/ |
