Default Drivers--Where are they?

Help! My Compaq notebook (Win98SE) seems to be demanding certain drivers
(or the non-existent Win98SE CD) while booting up after reinstalling a
Wireless adapter which used to work pretty well until recently. The
computer cannot find these files anywhere I can think of, including
c:\Windows\Options\cab, c:\Windows\System and c:\Windows\inf. This might be
why I am having trouble getting on the internet. I have also downloaded a
pile of files and drivers from Lilnksys but the needed drivers are not among
that stuff either. The files that seem to be missing are the following.
Why am I asked for stuff that isn't there? DO I need it? If so, where can
I get it? Needless to say, I do not have a Win98SE disc--seems Compaq does
not give them out. I think you are supposed to use the cab files.

dhcpcsvc.dll (indicate c:\windows\system and the file seems to be found)

inetmib.dll

networks

protocol

services

snmpapi.dll

arp.exe

ftp.exe

hosts.sam

ipconfig.exe

lmhosts.sam

nbtstat.exe

ping.exe

route.exe

telnet.exe

tracert.exe

winipcfg.exe

Following which the bootup is completed.

Many files on your list are installed with the initial OS install. But, the
network installation demands seeing the 98SE install CD first anyway.

It is pretty absurd but Compaq--the maker of my notebook--does not have and
says they never had a WIn98SE CD. Only options, they say, (a) to use their
"Restore CDs to reinstall the OS and return the machine to factory settings,
with all the attendat aggravation, or (b) buy a Win98SE CD "at the nearest
store." That would be . . . the 7-11? The grocery? The drug store? It
would be very politically incorrect to say that I have the urge to kill with
reference to a crew of Indian "techs," whose computer skills do not match
their enthusiams. Therefore I have the urge to kill whomever had the
brilliant idea to outsource it all.

Anyway, I am searching for a Win98SE CD. Is that like searching for an
honest politician?

You may already have some of the files. The default folder for many of =
them
is "c:\windows". Try "c:\windows\system" for the .dll files.

Any idea why that is - given that W98SE can't even read files from the
w98SE CD?

If your only option is to access these files from a Windows installation CD
then you should be able to get one on E-bay.

However some of the items in your list aren't files. You haven't indicated
exactly how you know that Windows wants these items, but it seems that you
haven't installed the networking options. Try accessing networking and
installing suitable protocols for your network hardware (such as TCP/IP for
the dial up adapter). See if Windows can then find the actual files it needs
for these functions either on the original CD or in a folder in the hard
drive. They are often installed in a folder called Options. Or, just look
for a folder that contains a large number of .CAB files.

You removed the OP in the reply. In the OP, it was stated he/she did not
own a W98SE CD.

Why a network install should need same, even if such files are already
installed, is not within my realm of knowledge. However, have observed this
requirement under these conditions many times.

Win98 asks for the files when you add a component, whether they are needed
or not. It assumes that they are not installed. If one knows that the
files exist in the correct folders, you can browse to those folders and the
files will be found or you can "skip" the files during the installation
process. If the correct versions are in the right place, this will work
just fine.
