Dial-up netwroking is missing
My friend just bought a second-hand PC from the IT department at his
workplace. It has Windows 98 (not SE) and has always been used on a network. I bought a 56k PCI modem and installed it OK, but dial-up networking on the machine is missing. Going into add/remove programs and clicking on the Windows Setup tab reveals nothing - it's completely blank, so I cannot choose from the normal communications checkbox to install dial- up networking. The dial-up networking icon is missing in My Computer. Obviously, the IT department have deliberately removed these components. Is there any way to replace them? Because the machine is second-hand, my friend doesn't have a Windows 98 disk. I have a Windows 98SE CD, but booting that and trying the Add Programs option doesn't work - perhaps I could manually extract the files from the disk, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for or how to install them onto the machine. I've checked the knowledge base as best I can, but all of the support notes I've read so far are based on the assumption that dial-up networking - or the option to install/reinstall - are present. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |
