Max You have to have an account on the Xp machine with the same user name and password as on the 98 machine IE on 98 log on as fred with password fred, on the XP create a user called fred with a password fred. If you dont log onto the 98 machine (IE you hit cancel at the login prompt ) then you will get an error about the network not being ready 98 by default uses "Workgroup" and XP uses "Mshome" as their respective workgroup names, change 98 to MSHOME then reboot them both and you should be OK |

Max You have to have an account on the Xp machine with the same user name and password as on the 98 machine That's not necessary if the XP machine runs Home Edition. It's only necessary if the XP machine runs Professional and if you've explicitly disabled simple file sharing on XP Professional. IE on 98 log on as fred with password fred, on the XP create a user called fred with a password fred. If you dont log onto the 98 machine (IE you hit cancel at the login prompt ) then you will get an error about the network not being ready Yes, that's right. 98 by default uses "Workgroup" and XP uses "Mshome" as their respective workgroup names, change 98 to MSHOME then reboot them both and you should be OK It makes networking a little easier if all computers use the same workgroup name, but it isn't necessary. A computer in any workgroup can access a computer in any workgroup. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. A computer in any workgroup can access a computer in any workgroup. How does one access computers in different workgroups? Thanks! To access another computer in any workgroup, type the other computer's name in the Start | Run box in this format: \\computer To see all of the workgroups on a network in Windows 98: 1. Click Network Neighborhood. 2. Click Entire Network. To see all of the workgroups on a network in Windows XP: 1. Click My Network Places. 2. Click "View workgroup computers". 3. Press the Backspace key. Then, click a workgroup to see the computers in that workgroup, and click a computer to see its shared resources. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
