Not quite - as Mike says, it's not my country, or my game (he and I are
Brits, and prefer the cricket).

It may be worth clearing the swapfile is case it's corrupted - either boot
to DOS with a floppy, or boot to XP (if it can see the ME install) and
delete the file WIN386.SWP (there will probably be two copies - one in C:\
and one in C:\Windows - delete both)

See if that helps

Yuk! The sooner someone comes up with a law forbidding Norton from being
preinstalled on systems the better since nobody in their right mind is
going to voluntarily go out and buy their rubbish ... or are they? g

Poor sod actually paid twice for it... once to update 2003, and once for
2006 (it's an XP box). Norton however has decided that there's no internet
connection, and refuses to be told otherwise.... even when I'm d/ling stuff
on the same PC!

I really DO NOT BELIEVE IT!!!!

just had a long tech chat with Symantec - it turns out that LU is incapable
of choosing its connection method properly, and insists on attempting to
connect via dialup, whatever you tell it - with the result that if you're on
a BB router, you get the error message. "Internet connection not detected",
if there are entries in the dialup section of the IE Connection tab.

Symantec cretinosity strikes again!!!

You can imagine what I said to the poor guy at the other end of the
line!!.... and I'll be advising the client to demand a refund from Symantec
(he got a download install) as 'unfit for purpose' (as I informed the techie
I would be doing).

This is the LAST machine that I ever work on without first ripping Norton
out by the entrails!

Hi Noel;
Cricket? To us Yanks, that's a totally incomprehensible game!
The good news is that setting usb emulation on gave me my mouse in safe
mode. The bad news is that system restore failed saying there are no
restore points available. I then did a scandisk and it said that everything
was good.
I deleted the WIN386.SWP files. The one in c:\ was 500 meg and the one
in c:\Windows was empty but I still can't boot normally.
Since it doesn't seem to be a memory problem, should I try to re-install
the original drivers that came with the machine (BTW, it's a 5 yr old Dell
Dimension 8100)?

Hi Noel;
I think I may be on the right track. About 2 wks ago I updated the
Catalyst driver for my ATI Radeon 7200 32meg card. Since the error msg
suggested that a driver wasn't loading properly,on a hunch, I went into Me
in safe mode and deleted the driver. I could then get into Me in normal
mode again. When I re-installed the driver, the problem re-appeared. Now I
have to try to find an older driver for that card.
I hope that I'm not speaking prematurely and that this will solve the
problem so I won't have to bother you again. Thanks to you and Mike, both,
for all of your help. You've been fantastic - thank you.

Why is it that I've never heard of Dimension 8100's before - and all of a
sudden I get deluged with queries about them?? - this is the third in a
week!!!

Dell were the only manufacturer to buy into RAMBUS big-time - and they
quickly learned the error of their ways - with the result that users got
abandoned because their support knew SFA about it.

Your results with the catalyst drivers do suggest strongly that the problem
originates there - it may be worth going through the ATI site (I know they
have at least the last four builds of the drivers available for download!)
to see what you can find that works.
