Default Hard drive issues on a P133

This relates to an earlier thread on a P133 that I got with no hard
drive.

The used hard drive that was then put in is 1.2 GB, fine for my W98SE use
and small programs.

When I first installed W98SE on it, I made an error in the product key
entry, so had to fdisk, then format before installing again.

I did that this AM, fdisk (no partitions) and format went fine, no
problems indicated.

Again I started to install W98SE. In the initial media check screen, I
got the message " the last cluster on the hard drive has errors or LBA is
disabled. Setup can't proceed until fixed."

I tried to run scandisk, same message.

I went into BIOS (Award) and the only reference I saw to LBA was Logical
Block Management, it had been disabled, I enabled it.

I again started W98 install, got same error message.

Advice?

I need to add:
When I started to install W98SE the first time, everything went Ok until
my error in the product key.

I found out today in Fdisk, there was existing one 540 MB partition on
the hard drive before I ran Fdisk. So windows did install on the existing
hard drive with no errors, in a small partion.

Today, when I removed the partition, so C:= 1.2 GB, I get the error
screen that the last cluster has errors. Maybe yesterday, windows did not
see the entire hard drive in the media check?

When you repartitioned, did you choose "Yes" when asked if you wanted to enable
large disk support? That screen is the one prior to fdisks screen.
If you did, hmmm. Nothing appears out of sorts, gonna have to look arond some
to see what comes up.

Yes, I followed your good advice. But before, the previous time, when
windows did start to install, it got past the media check screen. Was this
in fact because windows only saw the small partition, not the entire hard
drive?

And, if no fix develops, can I create a partition, say 1.0 GB, and avoid
the end cluster, just use windows in the portion of the hard drive?

Thanks,

ms

You might want to try using BootIt NG to repartition the drive.
www.bootitng.com. Once you've created the bootable installation diskette,
boot to it. When the prompt to Install appears, click Cancel. That drops you
into Maintenance Mode whence you choose Partition Work. Delete what's there
and then create a new partition. BING typically leaves the last 8MB of the
disk blank when you do this and that *might* help with the problem.

I'd be careful of using fdisk /mbr on a disk that had data I was concerned
about. but on *this* one? Go for it!

But I still think BootIt NG is a better idea. I just posted about that.

Thanks, Gary. I guess that would be the DOS BootIt.

I read their website again.

Image comes in a DOS version.

But Bootit NG reads like a windows utility, I still have a hard drive with
no OS on it.

Advice?
