Default program without name?

Whenever I had internet access and want to close down, the well known window
appears with the message "this program is not responding". Unlike other
cases when an application has stopped running, there is no program name in
the window. There is nothing in the startup folder and the window does never
appear without previous internet access. Unless I stop the program manually
Win98SE does not close down. Is this a known issue with IE 5? I had the
whole system checked by TrendMicro's house call, but no viruses were found.

Spyware/scumware/adware are causing numerous system problems. I recommend
you download and use either AdAware or Spybot (or both) and consider
removing everything these programs identify. Be aware that there are
frequent updates to these programs and you need to check for them before
every use including the first time.

Following your suggestions I have downloaded and executed Adaware. The
program found some registry entries and suspect malware/spyware files that
have all been removed now. The operation did however not solve the problem.

Those lines in Bootlog.txt are quite NORMAL, if somewhat mysterious. I have them too! If you have no virus or spy, it must be something more benign at fault. Maybe, take a second look for a virus at...

http://www.mcafee.com/us/
Free online scan. It will not effect a cure, but only report.

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Also McAfee. Will effect a cure for certain viruses only.

....After that...

(1) Do you close your NET connection, BEFORE you shutdown?
It's best to keep Windows's shutdown routine uncomplicated.

(2) Do you close IE, OE & all big apps, BEFORE you shutdown,
& wait for icon to leave the Taskbar?
I, myself, have sometimes crashed, if I don't do that!

Go to Run on the start menu and type: msconfig and click OK. When the
screen appears, click the start tab and check every item that is being
started at boot. If you do not recognize the entry, use a google.com search
to identify each item being started. Maybe that will identify the mystery
program. Also, do a full scan with an up to date anti virus program. I ran
into a stubborn Trojan recently--the .dll file was not identified as a
Trojan but it created files that were identified. I finally pin pointed the
file and had to delete it from DOS as it was being started very early in the
boot process and was not being started at the usual start up points.

You're still infested. With any serious infestation of scumware, you're
going to need to run a *lot* of different cleaners in order to get it all
out, and even then it's a toss-up. In addition to running all of the apps
Ron suggested, see

Default program without name?

Without the current application, the ctl-alt-del window always has following
entries:
Explorer
Atitask
Lexpps
Stimon
Systray
Dit
Aticwd32
Linksts
Rnaap
The 'ghost' program is of course not listed there because it has no process
name. I suspect it is a part of the internet explorer because there are no
shutdown problems if IE was not used in that session. If IE was loaded and
closed again, and the machine is left idle for some time, suddenly the
dialup window appears and waits for password entry. It can be closed but
keeps reappearing at random intervals between 5 and 30 minutes. To me it
seems that the IE hosts a hidden process that stays resident and ignores the
windows shutdown command.

I don't see Internet Explorer in that list. Other than Explorer,
Systray, & Rnaap, none of those are in my list. That isn't to say any is
necessarily a virus. I think, though, you should double-check on
ThrendMicro with...

http://www.mcafee.com/us/
Free online scan. It will not effect a cure, but only report.

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Also McAfee. Will effect a cure for certain viruses only.

After that, do as Badour & Terhune have said. Here are some sites to
identify what appears at...
"START button, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup Programs"

First pick one of these to identify what loads at boot. Next, see
whether there is an option in it's menus to disable it from starting up.
If you really want to rid yourself of it on a more permanent basis, then
look for it in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs". However, it isn't
often easy to know what is what in there. One of these URL's may say.

||||||| Whenever I had internet access and want to close down, the well
||||||| known window
||||||| appears with the message "this program is not responding".
||||||| Unlike other cases when an application has stopped running,
||||||| there is no program name in the window. There is nothing in the
||||||| startup folder and the window does never
||||||| appear without previous internet access. Unless I stop the
||||||| program manually
||||||| Win98SE does not close down. Is this a known issue with IE 5? I
||||||| had the whole system checked by TrendMicro's house call, but no
||||||| viruses were found.
