Default Can't get into Safe Mode

I have some of the dame CD drive issues mentioned in an earlier post, I
was starting to use that troubleshooting information, came on a new problem.

I can't get into Safe Mode.

I shut down, turn on, see in my initial screen:
Starting Windows 98...

ASAP, I tried:
Holding down the F5 key, then next time, holding down the Control key.

Either way, bootup continues into W98SE.

How to get into Safe Mode?

TIA

Try holding down the F5 key as soon as you see any text on the
screen. Same thing with the ctrl key.

F5 refreshes the Desktop. You want F8 for Safe Mode.

then next time, holding down the Control key.

You do that instead if you have a BIOS overlay installed
to support a larger hard drive than your PC's BIOS supports.

Either way, bootup continues into W98SE.

You probably don't have a BIOS overlay then.

How to get into Safe Mode?

F8

- Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu
(boot menu) appears.
OR
- Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count, and before the Windows logo
appears, to bring up the boot menu.
- Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.

Hugh,

Holding down the F5 key as soon as some text appears will take it
right into Windows Safe Mode. Hold down the key until the Safe Mode
screen appears. Shift F5 takes it to the Command Prompt and Shift F8
takes it to Step by Step.

After Windows loads F5 does refresh the Desktop, as you say, and
also refreshes Windows Explorer as you know.

If you can't get into Safe mode or get the Boot menu by pressing F5 or F8 or
CTRL when you boot, then when Windows starts, go to Start, Run and type:

msconfig

press Enter. Then click the Advanced button and click to select "Enable
Startup Menu". Now click OK. When you restart, you will get the menu that
allows you to choose how you want to boot.

Results so far:
glee suggested F8 and Control, they had not worked previously, Windows
started.

A local computer guy suggested:
Insert non system disk, reboot, when get error message, partially eject,
hit F8 twice- not work, GUI starts.

I held down F5 as soon as the Award bios screen started, - not work,
still Windows starts.

BTW, I have always run a minimalist syetem, not much installed,
regularly scanned for virus, malware, spyware, no resource issues.

The standard, classic methods to get Safe Menu aren't working. What does
that indicate?

Before the suggestion by Patty, anything less involved?

Did you HOLD DOWN the CTRL key,
or did you just press and release it?

You can try editing the MSDOS.SYS file
and force your computer to boot to Safe Mode that way.

Contents of the Windows Msdos.sys File

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/118579/EN-US/

The entry you need to change is

"BootSafe=Boolean
Default: 0
Purpose: A setting of 1 forces your computer to boot in Safe mode."

The instruction on how to change it are shown on that page also

Thanks, one of the times, I did hold down Control. Will look into above
link.
