Systray clock - closure
Follow up to all who helped tried to help me with making the
'hide_clock_feature' stick after a reboot. I decided to give my 6 year old PC a Xmas present and reformatted the hard drive (200,000+ reg entries down to just under 60,000). After hours of re- loading Win98 and upgrading to WinME (wish I had a full WinME disk rather than an upgrade disk) AND downloading IE6SP1 and ALL the patches and updates from MS AND downloading all my favourite applications AND downloading ALL the latest malware definitions AND etc etc ... I now have a systray clock that STAYS HIDDEN. ps ..... the 'floating clock' still floats and my systracl clock stays hidden, wohoo. original message follows Is there any procedure for disabling the system tray clock ? I can right click the taskbar, select 'properties' and un-check 'show system clock'. That removes the clock, but on next bootup the clock is back. Any way to make the un-check hold for good ? -- Adware/malware/spyware free since 1996, using IE and OE. |

WTG, Doc!
Any clues as to what killed the facility originally? BTW - unless your Upgrade disk was an OEM one, there was no need to install Win98 first, as the Win ME one would have asked for the 'qualifying Product' CD partway through the install to a clean system! (a bit late, I know, but....) -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj A Happy Xmas, and a Merry New Year to everyone! Must have been a side-affect of the static discharges being caused by your
Jingle ballz. Good to hear it's now fixed (in spite of the effort g) and thanks for the feedback Doc. Sledgehanner - nuts!! Mart "Doc" ] wrote in message ... A year or so ago I acquired a WinME 'upgrade' cd and upgraded to ME (smart move). I wasn't sure if the OEM98 recovery cd would be recognised as a qualifying media so took the long option of installing 98 first. As it turns out, that wasn't the 'longest' part of getting my PC back to the functionality it had before. sigh, downloading on dial-up is slow. Needless to say .. lesson learnt .... i now have a 'pristine' image of my C drive to revert to in future if required. Haven't we all! - and none of us has the ideal answer to the inevitable system degredation that occurs over time About the only true solution is the one you have already found - an image of the system to fall back to. Even that has its problems, as frequently trial software only becomes sufficient of a pain to make it worthwwhile to uninstall, after you've installed a load of other stuff, so you have to keep multiple images, etc, etc. BTW - unless your Upgrade disk was an OEM one, there was no need to install Win98 first, as the Win ME one would have asked for the 'qualifying Product' CD partway through the install to a clean system! AH yes - I misspoke above - The OEM recovery disks can be a PITA, I just wish that MS put the qualifier check earlier in the process - or even put an external verifier on the CD, so you could check before you started!! As it turns out, that wasn't the 'longest' part of getting my PC back to the functionality it had before. sigh, downloading on dial-up is slow. I'm with you there!! - my (a little ealry) Xmas present to myself was an ADSL connection Needless to say .. lesson learnt .... i now have a 'pristine' image of my C drive to revert to in future if required. I was impressed with the (relative) speed. So impressed, that is why I decided to reformat my PC at home ...... you know, sneak into work late on Xmas day, do all the downloads with ADSL, burn to CD, and upgrade my PC. The downloads etc went well, until it came time to burn to CD. DOH !!!!! no cd burner on the work PC. Wasted a couple of hours. DOH !!! Maybe a New Years pressie for the home PC. -- Adware/malware/spyware free since 1996, using IE and OE. |

You don't actually need to have windows 98 loaded to upgrade to ME, you just need
the original 98 disk and insert it when prompted as the Win ME install program will ask for it if it doesn't find a previous Windows installation on the HDD. To hide the clock, click a blank section of the task bar, click properites, and un-check "show clock". Click OK. reboot and see if the setting holds. "Doc" ] wrote in message ...
