Default File association for word documents in windows explorer

Dear sir
I am running word 6 and word 97 on the same computer. If I open a doc file
from Windows explorer, I use Word 97 to automatically open the file. This has
worked fine for years. Since a few days ago, if I double click on a doc file
in Explorer, word 6 is evoked. I have checked file types under folder options
under view to check the correct association and path and this appears to be
fine (I have tried with and without a /n at the end of the path). Please can
you help.

This is a separate problem concerning your
newsgroup reader. Post details in a NG
specializing in OE or Netscape or whatever
you use.

Hi, Don
Thank you for your message. I have tried that and windows still uses Word 6
to open the file despite me giving the path for Word 97. If I have 97 open it
uses that. This problem only started a few weeks ago.
I do not wish to get rid of Word 6. Sorry not to get back to you sooner but
I could not read your reply using IE version 5. I have only just installed v6.
Do you have any further suggestions?
Many thanks
WB

Quick method: Uninstal Word 6 if you are
reasonablly sure Word 97 meets all your needs.

Detailed method:
1. Select which app you want to use to open
DOC files. Write down its full filepath.
2. Select (highlight) one DOC icon and
Right Shift + Click to get menu.
3. Select menu item Open With . . .
You get a panel that lists apps. If your
preferred app is there, select it. If your
preferred app is not listed select / Browse
and go to the correct filepath to select
your preferred app.
4. Leave unchecked the box
"Always use this app . . ."
5. Click OK to open the DOC

If this works OK, repeat it and this time.
4. Check the box "Always use this app . . . "
This writes your App-DOC connection to
Registry and in future it will be reused
automatically.
