Win98 & Win95
I am running a HardDrive with Win98 installed on my computer - I have
another HardDrive with Win95 installed. Can I physically hook up Win95 HardDrive to the computer & be able to switch between both operating systems? |

Win98 & Win95
Yes, maybe. The easy way to switch between the systems is by using a boot
manager. I use: BootIt Next Generation is available from: http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ and it does partitioning, makes a compressed image, does many other partitioning chores and is a boot manager. It is not quite as easy to use as Partition Magic but it is half the cost and has more features. Unlike the crippled PMagic demo, BING is a *full function* demo you can try for FREE for 30 days. The web site has a lot of support articles. If the W95 hard drive is from a different machine, it may or may not require a reinstallation of W95 because of the different hardware of the two machines. I have had systems work fine by just booting and letting windows detect the new hardware. You will probably have to load some different drivers but the bottom line is, you just have to try it and work your way through any problems. If you use the boot manager above, you can always switch back to W98 and seek help here for any problems you can't solve. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo Bill wrote in message ... Win98 & Win95
Hi Bill,
No, it wont be that easy. The Win95 drive will be looking for the hardware it was originally installed on. Your best bet would be to install the Win95 drive into the Win98 system and wipe it clean and do a clean install of Win95. You will also need partitioning software to create a multi boot environment, such as Bootit NG. This will allow you to install and boot between the two OS. -- Regards, Bert Kinney [MS-MVP DTS] http://dts-l.org/ How to Configure Outlook Express for Internet News: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=171164 Bill wrote I am running a HardDrive with Win98 installed on my computer - I have another HardDrive with Win95 installed. Win98 & Win95
Hi Bert,
See my reply. I have on three or four occasions moved a drive from one machine to another to see what it would do. I did this as an experiment because I had read in the newsgroups that it couldn't be done because of the hardware differences. I wanted to see exactly what it would do and much to my surprise, it worked. Windows detected and loaded those devices it could and I had to load the display and sound drivers (no exact recall but that's old age I fear G). But, the machine did boot right up and W98 worked. Now, I am not saying that it will work whenever it is tried but it did work for me and four completely different computers were involved. I also don't know if W95 will handle this like W98 did. However, considering the minimal amount of time required to test it versus reloading W95, I think it is worth the effort. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Bert Kinney" wrote in message ... Win98 & Win95
Hi Ron,
I posted before your post showed up. I have only tried adding a drive with Win98 on it once or twice which did not work. After reading your results I agree, it is worth a try rather than going directly to a clean install. Thanks for sharing your experiences. -- Regards, Bert Kinney [MS-MVP DTS] http://dts-l.org/ How to Configure Outlook Express for Internet News: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=171164 "Ron Badour" wrote Hi Bert, See my reply.
