The Restore folder
Is there anyway of getting rid of either the restore folder or its contents
in Windows 98? I ran a virus check and it seems as though quite a bit of them are in their. When I tried to delete the folder windows said that it cant since some files are in use. The restore feature has been disabled and I didnt think that any files would be in use from there unless you wanted to do a restore. Can someone help and perhaps explain to me more about this folder since I dont have alot of info on it. And is there a way of purging it clean. Thanks in advance, Les |

The Restore folder
There is NO Restore folder in Win98.
If you are talking about Windows Millennium... Boot to DOS, using your Startup Disk (if you don't have one and can't make one from Start | Add/Remove Programs, then download a diskmaker from www.bootdisk.com, and create the floppy by running the file) At the A:\ prompt, type the following commands (followed by [return]) ATTRIB -S -R -H C:\_RESTORE REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST When the A:\ prompt returns, remove the floppy, and reboot the PC. The Control Files will be rebuilt, and a Restore point should be created. Then delete the C:\OLDREST folder, and reboot again. Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Les" wrote in message ... The Restore folder
As Noel says, W98 doesn't have a restore folder; however, he assumed you
might have ME and provided advice accordingly. Since you said you have W98, I think you should identify some of the contents of the restore folder so we can ensure that the advice we provide is appropriate for your system. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Les" wrote in message ... The Restore folder
Could he be talking about the 'Restore(lots of numbers)' folder that is
created when there is a dual boot set-up? I have one on every partition. Gekko As Noel says, W98 doesn't have a restore folder; however, he assumed you might have ME and provided advice accordingly. I don't know what he is talking about hence my suggestion that we figure out
what it is before he goes deleting it. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Gekko" wrote in message ... The Restore folder
Thanks everyone for your help and your cautiousness. I made a mistake not
mentioning the OS which is in fact ME. I noticed for some weird reason upon doing a virus scan that alot of the viruses were placed in the restore folder. It was in fact disabled so my thought was since it is only used for restoring that I could delete the folder. When I tried Windows said that some files are being used and that you cant delete them. Is this a virus stunt or does ME actaully use some of the files in that folder? I didnt think so but I am far from a Windows expert. Fill me in guys and thx again. Les "Gekko" wrote in message ... I think you need to ask this in the Windows ME group for a more definitive
answer. (This is the Windows 98 newsgroup) You might try microsoft.public.windowsme.general Les wrote: Thanks everyone for your help and your cautiousness. Here's the low-down on how/why what you're seeing happens

The Restore folder
This may or may not be germane to *your exact issue in WinME* at hand, but
it's prolly a good link to know of in general (IF you didn't already know of it). If you did have previous familiarity with it, then please excuse me. Checkpoints that you create after September 8, 2001 do not restore your computer (WinME) http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290700 BTW, there was a method I once regularly suggested, as it often arose in the former Lavasoft Support Forums for just such an instance, but I'd have to search my PC for where I have stashed it. cheers. -- LuckyStrike The best Tweak and your ally for IE = **Disable Active Scripting** http://www.helpwithwindows.com/techfiles/surf-safe.html How to make a good newsgroup post: http://www.dts-l.org/html/goodpost.html ------------------------------------------------------------ "Les" wrote in message ...
