Default Computer Switches Off on Own

Can anybody tell me how I can search my computer for
viruses without going into Windows 98. I believe I have a
virus as cannot start Windows. Cannot start in safe mode.
Is there software available that can be used in DOS so
that I can scan my hard drive from the 'C' prompt and
find out which virus I have or do I have to format my
hard drive and reload Windows 98 (which will cause me
much stress as I have no backups - yes I know, when will
I ever learn - PLONKER is tattooed on my forehead!!!).
System shutsdown before Windows starts. Any advice will
be much appreciated.
