Default File open details

Whenever I open a file open dialogue, it presents me with the filenames and
icons. I like to see the details, and select this most of the time, but each
time the dialogue opens, the view is reset to display icons and names only.
Is this a Windows property or have all application developers programmed
their file open dialogues to the same default? Is there a way to get all of
these to open with their view set to display the details?

Any help would be much appreciated.
