ME reinstallation produced "SUWIN caused GPF in module verx.dll" - amongst other things

My long, sad story............I let a friend of mine use an older laptop of
mine (DELL I8000 w/WinMe, 850MHz CPU, 30GB HD, 512MB Mem, DVD/CDROM, Floppy,
CD Burner, Wireless PCMCIA, etc) at their workplace. They connected it to
the company network. Their network engineer apparently (or so I was told)
uninstalled PcHealth from it, stating they did so because it was causing
problems for them on their network........blah, blah, blah. Needless to say,
in doing so I lost not only PCHealth but MsInfo, SYSRestore, etc. Not
wanting to dig too deeply for a fix I decided to re-install WinMe (sorry,
not a clean re-install) just a redo over) from my OEM supplied CD.

Ahhh & then the trouble began.........At about 65% completion of the install
I got a dialog box stating -- "SUWIN caused a GPF in module verx.dll". I
tried again & again & again. Note: I did all this using a start-up disk so I
could do the re-install through a DOS prompt. I finally gave up, rebooted
back into Windows & had several dll's & drivers missing (winspool.drv, etc)
I reinstalled those using CAB files. However, I'm back to square
one......still no PCHealth, SYSRestore & MSInfo. I tried getting the MSInfo
back using a little "ditty" CAB extraction fix from Microsoft's web site but
it didn't work. I've reviewed many of the user's forums out there but so
many are conflicting or sound preposterous that I've given up & am asking
this group for help. Only one deems mentioning because it's been expressed
in several groups but with slight variations - that being the following
because........ Yes, I DO HAVE IE 6.0 & WMP 9.0 on this laptop.

before re-installing Win Me. If this is the case you might want to have a

Express 6.0 Before You Reinstall Windows"

Rename c:\program files\Internet Explorer\W2k\migrate.dll *.old

Rename c:\program files\outlook express\9xmig.dll *.old

WMP 9.0:

Rename c:\windows\system wmp*.dll *.old

Rename c:\windows\system wmp.ocx *.xoc

Rename c:\program files\windows media player wmp

After that, run setup again.

So, I'm in a conundrum......I don't want to make the above attempt without
some knowledgeable input. I dread having more issues to deal with if it
didn't go well and I don't want to reformat & do a clean install on this
laptop because I use it for data storage & numerous downloads. It would
prove to be such a huge hassle to do anything short of a re-install of
WinME. Yes, I back it up, no it has nothing personal on it (I wouldn't have
loaned it out). I know, I know, call me stupid for having done so. I just
want SYSRestore & MSInfo back - it's that simple. I realize this may have
come up before but I couldn't locate anything like it so I apologize for the
redundancy in advance.

The only 'required' item from that fix is the renaming of WMPloc.dll - you
should then be able to reinstall ME OK - but look here for the full details
of reinstalling ME over itself....

So far, so OK. Just a story about why cavalier sysamins suck or (from
the other side of the fence) why connecting arbitrary PCs to an
in-house network is a Bad Idea.

Not wanting to dig too deeply for a fix I decided to re-install WinMe (sorry,
not a clean re-install) just a redo over) from my OEM supplied CD.

Well, that's where the pain starts. Instead of tshooting a problem
(which likely needed about 32 bytes typed into two locations via
Regedit to fix) you did a broadsword steam-roller move that has
wrought a massive number of changes that will likely be more difficult
to troubleshoot than the original problem.

If you're lazy on undoing one change, do you feel up to this new task?

Out the box, WinME is unfit for use on the Internet (one reason alone:
Broken IE HTML rendering engine allows MIME-spoofing attack, as
routinely used by malware since 2001) and several other subsystems are
broken. For example, the SR you wanted back is dead in the water
unless you reapply the patch that "just re-installing Windows" broke.

WinME's (re)installation process is cavalier about version
differences; it nukes everything back to its own baseline versions.
Not only is that "goodbye all patches", it also breaks horribly on
several core subsystem upgrades, e.g. IE, DirectX, Media Player.
