Illegal operation
Computer is getting "program has performed illegal
operation and will be shut down". But I cannot do anything but manually turn off the computer. The file status under the Performance tab is set to 32, so KB #175703 did not help. Only other thing is that person last tried to send email with attachment over the Internet. And supposedly the problem started happening. Please offer suggestions on what I might try next. Thanks, Susan |

Illegal operation
I have 3 different apps giving error message
"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down". It all started over the weekend. I tried to restore the registry back to last Wednesday but that did not work. Well, what are the three programs? Also, what is the precise wording of
the error messages. If there is a Details button, click it, R-Clk inside the box that appears, & copy/paste it here. (We do not need registers & below.) Illegal operation
The error message is:
"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor" The apps are 1) PCCguide which is part of Trend Micros Internet Security 2004, it is in the startup 2) Mymail which is MyMailList 5.0.2.0 3) Qbdagent2002 which is part of Quick Books Pro. There are also invalid page fault errors with the MyMail and QBDAGENT2002 under the details. Do you think Windows install will help? Should I do Refresh the Operating System (dirty install) or Recover Hard Drive without Format (clean install)? Please tell me what you would do. What program do you have that is giving the wording you use... "Refresh
the Operating System" & "Recover Hard Drive without Format"? (a) Some say an over-install of Windows will lead to "DLL-hell". Have you done it before? Illegal operation
I found post by Dell Moderator ChrisM about using
resource/system cd for the Windows install. Computer is Dell. I have only installed Windows ME with formatting the HD first about 3 times, and installing Windows XP Pro once after I screwed up IIS. I do not know what exactly happened since employee called me after errors. I am a volunteer for the local non- profit organization. All I know another employee used her computer to send email with attachment and computer was left on over week-end. Lightning striked electrical box but don't know if there could be any connection. I would have thought lightning would totally mess up computer and fry it if there was. I agree that something else must messed up for three separate apps to be messed up. Thanks for your input. Illegal operation
I would also think a lightning strike to do other than this. You are
practiced in a Fresh Install, but it may be different with the Dell. Naturally, anything not included on the Dell CD(s) would have to be reinstalled afterwards. You must find a way to backup all important files/downloads, before doing a fresh install. (Some say to do so before even an over-install.) Did those three misbehaving apps come with the Dell? I can't quite tell what "Recover Hard Drive without Format" is saying. I do know, my Compaq QuickRestore CD(s) do allow selective restore of many Compaq drivers. Perhaps that is what Dell's "Refresh the Operating System" might do. | Computer is getting "program has performed illegal | operation and will be shut down". But I cannot do | anything but manually turn off the computer. | "This program has performed an illegal operation and will | be shut down". Let us see whether DrWatson will say more... It sits waiting for a crash, then traps it, putting info into the Diagnosis tab. (a) "START, Find, F/F, DrWatson.exe". (Should be in "C:\Windows".) (b) R-Clk it, point to "Send to" & click "Desktop (Create shortcut)". (c) R-Clk the shortcut on the Desktop, & select "Cut". Illegal operation
Here is one thing that could have far-reaching effects across apps. I
have finally actually done this myself, (but it didn't cure the slight wobble I often see in my display screen). http://support.microsoft.com/default...39&Product=w98 Troubleshooting Video Problems in Windows "START, Run, MSConfig, Advanced button". If checked, then uncheck "VGA 640x480x16", & reboot. "Control Panel, Display, Settings tab". Select as you wish from the Colors dropdown menu & the Size slider. Really, you should need nothing higher than "High Color (16 bit)", for speed/resource considerations. If you move the Screen Area slider to 1024x768 there, be sure to click the Advanced button, & select Large fonts. Try to get your colors/size at least twice that way. If it continues to fail, you may need to reinstall your Monitor or Display Adapter... For the Monitor... (1) Boot to Safe Mode (Hold F5 as you boot or CTRL for the Startup Menu) (2) "START, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab" (3) Open the Monitors branch, & Remove all entries. Perhaps, FIRST, even in Normal Mode, note what is installed similar to below for the Adapter. That is... (a) D-Clk the monitor there for Properties, Driver tab. (b) Click the Update Driver button, then "Next". (c) Bolt "Display a list...", & click "Next". (d) Bolt "Show all hardware". Examine the two panes to see what is currently installed. That is likely what you wish to end up with, after step (4). (4) Boot to Normal Mode. Hopefully, it will be rediscovered & installed. Then, if still necessary, here is the rigmarole of the Display Adapter... .......Quote.......... The first thing to do is to remove the video adapter you have installed. Right-click on the desktop; choose "Properties" from the drop-down menu; select "Settings;" click on the "Advanced" button; and click on "Adapter". An adapter is a program that tells Windows how to deal with a specific video card. Make note of the adapter that is currently installed. Then, change the adapter to "Standard Display Adapter (VGA)" and restart the system. [That is: Click "Change, Next, bolt 'Display a List...', Next, bolt 'Show all hardware', scroll left pane to top, select '(Standard display types)', select 'Standard Display Adapter (VGA)' in right pane, click 'Next'"... PCR] This will remove the current adapter and replace it with a generic VGA adapter that works with all video cards. You will not like VGA because it supports only 16 colors, but the purpose of installing it is to get rid of whatever was there before. Next, return to the adapter screen and install an adapter that matches your video card. This may or may not be the adapter that you are using now. Examine the materials you received with your computer to see if they include a CD-ROM or floppy disk that contains the correct video adapter. Or go to the Gateway website and see if they have an adapter for you to download. Or check the website of the company that made your video card. Bill Starbuck (MVP) .......End....of quote.... -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Susan" wrote in message ... | I found post by Dell Moderator ChrisM about using | resource/system cd for the Windows install. Illegal operation
I was at my wits end. Trend Micro said to reinstall their
PCcillin Internet Security 2004 which I did and error occured again. Dell guided me through the dirty install of Windows 98 and error was still there. I was down to the option of doing Fresh Install. The Director decided to hire person to fix it. At least I could tell him what I had tried. He came and updated IE, determined that the system date was in error and fixed that. He did this in less than hour. I don't know how date got changed but now realize that it was probably reason that the Trend Micro free online virus scan would not work either. There was date problem with that. At least I was able to hand him MS security cd and he applied the Windows updates. He did not know about the free Microsoft cd but said he was going to order one tonight. I am glad it is fixed though. I ought to stick to painting! (d) Open Explorer to "C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp" (e) R-Clk in the R-Pane, & select "Paste". Now, it will always boot to the Tray, waiting for a crash or a D-Clk. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- us;275481 How to troubleshoot program faults with DrWatson -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Susan" wrote in message ... | I found post by Dell Moderator ChrisM about using | resource/system cd for the Windows install.
