This was fixed with a re-boot. (cold worked, warm didn't) but it
leaves me more than curious.

Out of the blue, after being online (dialup) for several hours, no
unusual actions on my part.
Mouse wheel switches from scroll page to zoom in. Cannot type to
google search window, OR browser address bar, cannot backspace or
delete what is there, forward and back arrows move whole word not 1
space.

CAN copy and paste though. This is all within the browser (K-Meleon
1.5.4)

What the hell could do that?

Interesting

Since holding ctrl and using the scroll wheel is usually zoom, and
ctrl- and ctrl - move whole words in edit mode, I'd take a guess that
the ctrl key on your keyboard was stuck.

Thank you Bill, if that happens again now I have something to look
for. I'm raising chicks in my computer room, (poultry chicks) and
maybe my keyboard's crudded up from the dust..

Never heard of that one...
when my grandfather raised chickens back in 1938...
they never crudded up the keyboard ...
I'm wondering if maybe you have elephants sneaking in at night?

I have an LC Smith & Corona
of about the same vintage.

It's still on my desk and I used it every day until about then years ago
when I got my computer.

I still use it from time to time

I always thought it was from the '40's
but it was probably from the 30's I see

maybe even a bit earlier

My parents had this one (I think)
http://mytypewriter.com/underwoodmasterc1939.aspx

I doubt they bought it new, but they had it for years before it was
thrown out for an IBM selectric. Too bad,, it'd be nice to still have it.

When cleaning the house the other day I finally got rid of two non-working
IBM selectrics

I just have too much junk here.

But I still have the original IBM electric typwriter in working condiditon

My mom had an Underwood No. 5, which is what I used for all my papers in
high school. It was a 1926 model, IIRC:

When I was in college, I found an Underwood ledger typewriter in a flea
market, and did all my writing on it using oversized sheets of paper:

Here's some of the Underwood line:

Frankly, I don't know how anybody got anything done back then ;-)
It must have required a lot of planning before sitting down to the
typewriter and then a good amount of concentration to get it off in one
draft..
