Default Start Button, windows button and CTRL-Esc do not work

Hi
I am new to this group. I have a Pentium3 450mhz processor and am using
windows 98. I recently have been trying to remove a major Spyware infection.
I hope most of it is now gone. It seems as if the maon culprit was
CoolWWSearch. When I discovered the problem the Start Button on the task bar
would depress when clicked but the popup menu did not come up. I have tried
thw Windows button and CTRL-Esc but with no success. Does anyone know what
the problem is?

Thanks John

First, see my article on Security at
http://www.grystmill.com/articles/security.htm

Use the resources I suggest, particularly those at Aumha.org, to verify that
your system is truly clean. You'll probably need to post a HijackThis log to
one of the appropriate forums (not here!) for final analysis. Before going
any further, though, make sure you have "Show All Files" enabled in Folder
Options, View tab. While you're there, make sure "Hide Extensions..." is
DISabled.

Also, are you fully up to date at Windows Updates?

Next, see my article "Clean Boot -- What it is and why you need it"
http://www.grystmill.com/articles/cleanboot.htm

Set up a clean boot, clean things up, and see if the Start Menu works when
nothing else is running in the background.

If the problem still remains, I suggest you try IE Repair. While still in a
Clean Boot state, run MSINFO32.EXE and look in the Tools menu. Since you
can't get to the Run box in the Start menu, you'll need to open My Computer
and drill down to MSINFO32 from there -- it's probably in C:\Program
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSINFO\

Hmmm... Do you have a Windows key on your keyboard? What happens when you
press that?

Gary
Thanks for information. I will check it out and get back to you via this
post. As noted above noe of the items work. I have run Spy sweaper, Ad-Aware,
Spy Ferret, Spybot and CWShreader. Just when I think I am clean I run
anotherone and some thing comes up. All this when the system is isolated from
the internet.
Let me check your suggestions out and get back to you.

Oops! Didn't read the subject line, did I, s.

To you and to others: While it is good to use an appropriate Subject, don't
make it an integral part of the message. If the Subject line includes
pertinent details, repeat them in the body of the post. Not that this
excuses me in this case, but it's easier to work with messages where all of
the pertinent data is included in the body of the message. Things like error
messages are much easier to copy from the body in order to paste into search
engines. There's also a mental thing that happens when you do a lot of NG
reading, that leads us focus on the Body, not the Subject. I press Ctrl-U to
get to the next Unread message, and then start reading. Subject lines are
just for indexing and sometimes making searching easier.

Gary and PCR thanks for the reminder. I am normal pretty careful in my work
envirnment but confess to being not as good outside. May explain the source
of my initial problem. Will continue to read Gary's papers and work on the
computer. I did note that Gary advise *not to use the immunize feature in Spy
Bot*. Unfortunately I have. I hope that is not a big problem.
It is interesting to note that while running SpyFerret and Spy Bot in safe
mode. the computer goes into sleep mode in about 30 to 45 minutes even though
both the power saver and the Accesability features are turned off.
Will report back on the weekend.

Sounds to me like you have some power management enabled in BIOS. Windows
Power Management does not, I think, function in Safe Mode. You should look
in BIOS Power Management settings. Not sure what you'll see, but the idea is
to enable APM or ACPI, but DISable all the timers listed there.

As for Immunization, I've forgotten the details, but it is known to
potentially cause problems in IE that are difficult to repair. I liken it to
TweakUI, which can be quite useful, but which can also get you into trouble.
There are other app, like SpywareBlaster, that do a good job of preventing
"bad" sites from loading in your browser in simple, safe and effective ways.

You are welcome. No big deal, really. Someone always does end up reading
those Subject lines, anyhow, sooner or later! :-).

No, seriously, HijackThis likely will cure your condition in the end.
But post the log before taking action. And here are some tutorials...

Default Start Button, windows button and CTRL-Esc do not work

Gary and PCR
Again thanks for your help. Once I figured out how to get to MSconfig with
out the start button (Gary's coaching is appreciated), I got to do a clean
boot. I checked my power management setting and low and behold they were back
on (I must have forgotten to 'apply'). Set up a "never" for the power
management situation.
Bottom line I now have Start button functionallity. I will run HiJack this
after looking at the tutorials and will update the Windows 98 files once I am
confident that I can use the machine on the internet.
I still have 3 progams - Home search assistent and 2 others - that, when I
do an add/delete progams, indicate that they need to go to a HTTP site to
uninstall. I hope that Hijackthis can get advise on how to get rid of these.
Again thanks for you help. This group is awesome. I will open some other
threads or check the sites you have shown me to cure some other 'problems'.

Thanks John

You are welcome. No big deal, really. Someone always does end up reading

No, seriously, HijackThis likely will cure your condition in the end.
But post the log before taking action. And here are some tutorials...

| |
| | Next, see my article "Clean Boot -- What it is and why you

| |
| | Set up a clean boot, clean things up, and see if the Start

| |
| | If the problem still remains, I suggest you try IE Repair.
While
| still
| | in a

| Since you
| | can't get to the Run box in the Start menu, you'll need to
open My

You are welcome. Very good. Include the request about Home Search
Assistant and the two others in your submission to those HijackThis
sites, although likely they'll see them in the report.

I'm sure the first step will be to look for those three in Add/Remove
Programs. However, if they truly are badies, that won't be all there is
to it.
