Default finding a windows version number now OT about my boondoggle with MSKB and WU

Here's a top 10 list:
1 I_VIEW32 245 2004.06.26 C:\PROGRAM
FILES\IRFANVIEW\I_VIEW32.EXE
2 IEXPLORE 121 2004.06.26 C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET
EXPLORER\IEXPLORE.EXE
3 MPLAYERC 71 2004.06.26 C:\PROGRAM FILES\MEDIA PLAYER
CLASSIC\MPLAYERC.EXE
4 RUNDLL32 71 2004.06.26 C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE
5 MSIMN 33 2004.06.26 C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK
EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE
6 OUTLOOK 22 2004.06.26 C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT
OFFICE\OFFICE10\OUTLOOK.EXE
7 NOTEPAD 21 2004.06.26 C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE
8 WINWORD 21 2004.06.26 C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT
OFFICE\OFFICE10\WINWORD.EXE
9 EXPLORER 16 2004.06.26 C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE
10 REGEDIT 14 2004.06.26 C:\WINDOWS\REGEDIT.EXE

Mind you, I had done a Defrag just prior (a couple of days earlier) to
deciding to re-enable Taskmon and see what resulted from it. Wonder what it
might have shown me then? I listen to a lot of music -Irfanview mp3 player-
while sitting here. That one *really* benefitted from the Taskmon enhanced
Defrag. Sometimes it would take 20 seconds to load the file, saying "no file
loaded". Now...at the worst it takes maybe 5 seconds, but is mostly
instantaneous, particularly if it is in ongoing operational status. Read
"playing already" ;-))

Yeah, that WU thing had happened once before sometime last year, but the fix
was to add/change some of the MS Url's that I had in there, IIRC. That
*wasn't* it this time though. Just when things are going along smoothly....
Well, if it ain't broken, it's a miracle; if it's working, it's
supernatural...and it won't be working for long. g

245/71 times lollygagging with IrfanView/WMP! Well... I do see you are
not ENTIRELY fun/games, as REGEDIT did make your top ten, though! Also,
I doubt you are infected with any virus. Those numbers will update every
time you do a Defrag, now that Taskmon is activated.

Although Defrag is quicker-- does far less work-- when run regularly
(try two in a row), STILL I really wouldn't do it just to see an
Optlog.txt.

How would you like to move your swap file out of the way of a Defrag?
That file is not moved during a Defrag, & all others must pussyfoot
around it!

Care to elucidate the moving of the swap file thing? The "how to's", that
is.

Interesting observation of the relation to a virus and the updated number.
Hmmm... had not thought of that as a subtle detector device. And yeah, I do
lollygag about, but also try to be useful and serious with matters. But
music soothes the savage beast... hehe.

No, I wouldn't do a defrag just for the heck of viewing a change in
Optlog.txt. --- seems to thrash the HD around quite a bit. On a similar
subject of thrashing: I had asked a long time ago in this NG about when one
uses Ad-Aware, Spybot (in particular) and other programs (e.g PestPatrol)
which scope around the HD at a pretty fast clip if they also thrash the
drive. Never got a direct answer. Got one of those "is your HD still
warranted by the .mfg? If so just do it, and it it dies get a new one". Dumb
answer which side-stepped my question.

Default finding a windows version number now OT about my boondoggle with MSKB and WU

Right. Since my HDD crash of 2001, I have often worried over those
things myself. I certainly have uninstalled the MS Critical Update
Notification Tool, which was accessing my HDD every five minutes, on or
off-line! And I have upgraded to 384 MB RAM, which holds swap file
activity in check. But reading is better than writing, & I surely
haven't quit running McAfee.

The huge bulk of "unmovables" during a Defrag is the swap file. After
that, any CVS (Compressed Volume File) may also be big. Finally, in
Win98, any file that is attributed both "System" & "Hidden" will be an
unmovable. I have discovered that, if you've turned on Thumbnail View
for a folder, it will create a Thumbs.db in that folder...

THUMBS DB 89,600 12-14-03 2:36a 12-14-03 HS
THUMBS DB 219,648 07-01-03 10:51p 12-16-03 HS A
THUMBS DB 48,640 06-22-03 11:08p 12-16-03 HS A

(Now, I have turned it off, & they have disappeared.)

Well, here is how to isolate the swap file, so that it will not intermix
with others & cause Defrag to pussyfoot around it...

(a) Set swap file minimum size to 300 MB, & reboot back to windows.
Do so at "Control Panel, System, Performance tab, Virtual Memory
button". This will create a 300 MB space for a swap file. It may not be
entirely contiguous. Set the minimum only.
(b) Boot to DOS
(c) SMARTDRV
(to speed up the following considerably)
(d) COPY Win386.swp Win386.jnk
(This fills in gaps between files, so that later Win386.swp will
be contiguous.)
(e) REN Win386.swp Win386.old
(Win386.swp will recreate at boot.)
(f) Boot to Windows
(Now, you have Win386.jnk, Win386.old, plus a new Win386.swp.)
(g) In Explorer, delete Win386.jnk & Win386.old. Hold Shift as clicking
to Delete to prevent it goes into the Recycle Bin!
(h) Do whatever you normally do, to keep the following from constantly
restarting.
(i) Scandisk (Thorough, usually w/o write checking)
(j) Defrag

Now I had my buffer between the swap file & the rest of my files. This
is meant to keep the swap file out of the way of the rest of the system
during a Defrag. There may have been some little bit of the swap file
still among the other files, but the vast bulk of it was one contiguous
block 300 MB away! I saw it, by pausing Defrag before it ended &
scrolling past a sea of white to the sea of red! (By the way, "REN
Win386.swp Win386.old" created a zero byte file, or I am a madman!)

Notes:
1. This need be done but once this way, except should you subsequently
delete Win386.swp. Anyhow, mine has stayed put!
2. The 300 MB swap file has moved to the root folder C:\, because a
minimum size was specified.
3. You still have a "C:\Windows\Win386.swp", but it is zero bytes in
size.
4. It has been promised "C:\Win386.swp" will never move physically on
the hard drive. Those 300 MBs will stay put. However, should the swap
file get larger than that, the excess will intermix with other files.
When the swap file shrinks, it will then return to the 300 MB area.
5. The purpose of Win386.jnk was to give the system room for growth,
before it must use disk space on the other side of the swap file. (It
does appear to work that way.)

Is it all worth it? I really think it did make a difference.

OK then..this post has been duly saved so as to have it for reference at the

the process and don't want to overdo it. You know what I mean. Thanks for
the description; your efforts will not be wasted.

Yes, there is that huge block of immovables that sits towards the end of the
drive; not at the very end, but at least 65 - 75% + through it.

So, do you think the anti-spyware scanners knock the HD-D around or not?

Fine! But I swear you should do it! (Or move the swap file to another
partition, but THAT should be the 1st Primary of a second HDD. I didn't,
because that is what holds my precious clone.)

I think, except for .log files, anti-spyware scanners are just reading,
not writing. Still, I wouldn't multi-task them unnecessarily, to set
heads a bob, bob, bobbing! Also, you do recall, SpyBot is WACKY with
it's .log's-- at least, v1.2 surely was!

Don't have a partitioned set-up yet. Nor did I ever get a second hard drive,
but it has been a back-up nightmare, and I have more disks than the
Smithsonian!

But, *don't fret*! I'll get roundtuit. ;-)

And yep... you're prolly right...they're just reading and not writing, but
they still make the HD-spin and make a little noise. I'd never run two of
them at once, and in fact, I don't even run any without having all other
windows closed. The log thing is better for me now. Not sure if it's the
result of ver. 1.3 or the changes I made to how the logs are written.

| Yes, there is that huge block of immovables that sits towards the end

| So, do you think the anti-spyware scanners knock the HD-D around or
not?

| Right. Since my HDD crash of 2001, I have often worried over those

| The huge bulk of "unmovables" during a Defrag is the swap file.
After

| Is it all worth it? I really think it did make a difference.

OK, then. Do get a second HDD, & put a clone on it. That REALLY is your
first priority! As far as partitions, I'm flooded with them now. It
makes backup a tad more complex, as my clone no longer has it all. OK,
bye.

Your advice is almost without exception, sound and worth following. I'd
think that this is the case with the present recommendations. As per
usual... thanks. ;-) ...and bye. g
