Default Can not sign in on websites that require my name & password

Recently encountered problems while using internet, since 16 June 2004. I currently use IE ver.6.
I can browse internet for most part but when I go onto several websites where I have established accounts and try to log-in, I get messages to the effect that the 'page can not be displayed or that there is a problem with server, try again later'. I have tried logging onto these sites several times and checking my name/password entries for mistakes. I have also contacted my internet provider to troubleshoot the problem and they have not been successful in solving it.
This evening I tried to scan for Microsoft Updates and received a message the server and to try again later, which I did and still no success. I tried to post this message using my computer (the one running win98 & having the problems) but couldn't do that either, got diverted to the same page that says 'page can not be displayed or that there is a problem with server, try again later'. So I've had to go on another computer to send this message.
Has my computer been infected with a virus or worm that I'm having these problems all of a sudden?

For advice specific to problems with secure sites, have a look at the first
