Default REPOST: MSIE5 illegal operation message - help

(posted earlier in microsoft.public.win98.setup without any helpful replies)

Yep, I still use plain IE5 as it came with 98SE. (Not my browser of first
choice, but some sites seem to dislike Nutscrape).

Of late, after shutting down IE, an error msg box appears anything from 10 secs
to several minutes later. "This program has performed an illegal operation and
will be shut down". Under details "IEXPLORE .EXE caused an invalid page fault
in module MSHTML.DLL at ...."

If I try to shutdown the pooter after closing IE and the msg hasn't already
appeared, it generates that "WAIT/END_NOW/CANCEL(?)" box, and sometimes before I
can say kill it the ermes box appears.

I have spent hours in the MSKB and also searched www.aumha.org without finding a
specific reference to this combination of error message and reference to the
MSHTML parser.

Is there a process Ic an follow to identify the cause?

IE isn't listed in the add/remove choices under control panel or from the
opening splash choices on the CD itself. So how do I reinstall it short of a
total 98SE reinstall?

PS: Please don't offer advice on why I should use a later version of IE or O/S.
If that's your only suggestion, save bandwidth.

Have you tried running a repair on Internet Explorer?

Click StartRun, type the following and click Enter, for IE5x:
RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE5Maintenance

Choose the Repair option, and follow the prompts.

Here are some to look at.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...94&Product=w98
Various Error Messages Displayed and Slow Windows Performance When
Virtual Memory Is Enabled (239094) - When you click the Performance tab
of the System Properties tool, you may receive the following message:
Performance may be improved by enabling virtual memory. If you examine
the Virtual Memory option, virtual memory is enabled. In addition,
Windows...

That one is unlikely. It says your Swap File should not be attributed
Read-Only. Anyway, you didn't describe all that.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...98&Product=w98
Error Message: Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module
Mshtml.dll at 015f:70cbb044
(298098) - When you attempt to access the CD-ROM drive on your Microsoft
Windows-based computer, you may receive an error message similar to the
following: Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module Mshtml.dll at
015f:70cbb044 -or- When you attempt to use...

That one says to replace MSHTML.dll from your cabs. However, that would
be an old version of a file that surely has been updated, with every IE
cumulative update. Therefore...

(1) "START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu, IE Repair Tool"
It produces a rather large "Fix IE Log.txt" in C:\Windows. IE & E
are basically one & the same. If this crashes, an over-install of IE is
indicated.

(2) Over-install IE. Try first without, but I believe it will request an
internet connection. Perhaps it is best to let it connect, actually. If
you don't care to get this fancy, just skip to step (c).

(a) Turn off interfering programs. Use http://www.pcmag.com/ 's
"StartupCop" or "EndItAll2". Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab".
Note what is unchecked, if anything. Then, go to the General tab &
disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking
"Load Startup...". Reboot.

(b) Perhaps, if you haven't got EndItAll2, then "Ctrl-Alt-Del" & end
task all but Explorer & Systray. If this goes badly, start again from
top, & skip it next time.

(c) "START, Find, F/F, IE6Setup.exe". Click it in the Find window.

NOTE: If you are IE5, then it's "IE5Setup.exe". If there are more
than one (I have two each), click the one in "C:\WINDOWS\Windows
Update Setup Files" or "C:\Windows Update Setup Files", as applicable.

(d) Re-enable the Startup Group. That will automatically check all
items. Go to the Startup tab & uncheck any noted in step (a). Reboot.

(e) Perhaps go to Windows Update, to see whether it now offers
criticals.

If Nutscape(whatever that is) or any other is not to your
likeing then why not upgrade to IE6.
I may be way out on a left field limb here.
But due to the fact you are using IE5 and not having the
benefits of the IE6 Critical updates which alot are
designed to protect your PC from malicious activities. You
probly have some spyware/hacking stuff on your PC that
will not allow IE to shut down properly.
I would suggest to upgrade to IE6 and get ALL it's
updates.
Then get,update and run AdAware.
Good Luck!

"Nutscrape" = Netscape

Netscape is my browser of choice, but certain sites seem to have 'difficulties"
with it, so I use IE as well.

Nope, this machine is checked quite regularly for malware.

I would suggest to upgrade to IE6 and get ALL it's
updates.

and all its updates weaknesses? MS seem to have a solid record of "one step
forward, two steps back" when it comes to plugging holes.

Then get,update and run AdAware.

Already running AdAware among other malware products.

That only allows the "Add a component" option - the others are greyed out.

And if I select OK for that option, I get an ermes "Cannot find Windows Update
Setup files on this computer. Please run Setup again from its original
location."

Remember this is IE5 (.0?) as shipped bundled with 98SE, which cannot even be
removed with "Add/remove software" in Control Panel.

As an alternative, any suggestions on how to reinstall just IE5 and not
reinstall 98SE as a whole?

Henri's site steers me towards the same MSKB articles that I have already
perused

Unless I have overlooked it repeatedly, there is not a KB article dealing with
this specific combination. There are certainly many with "invalid page" as the
primary error type, but this one is "illegal operation" as described in my O/P.

Also the only referenced article on Henri's site that related to this specific
error message and 98 was not relevant to IE.

But thanks for the URL - I'll keep that one handy for future reference.

Really? How so? Do tell.......

So I guess you think an old unsupported browser like IE5
is nice and safe and not a security hazard huh?
