Default Invisible task?

I seem to have performance degradation so I bring up the
system monitor and sure enough, there's something taking a
constant 50% of the machine. Curiously, wintop.exe shows
nothing. Mouse activity causes usage to dip (weird).
Eliminating tasks one by one using 3 finger salute fails
to locate perpetrator. I've tried the major malware
checkers to no avail.

Anybody with any ideas?
